Joe:

I cast at 862 degrees but for a 32 caliber bullet I have to hold the down spout on the sprue plate a very short time.

With the hotter alloy I will get more whiskers if I hold the dipper too long on the sprue plate.

I also rub the corners on the top with a stone; to help vent air out under the sprue plate.

This also helps to prevent air bubbles getting trapped in the bullet.

I would try hotter and quicker casting when you have a difficult mould.

My mould is also preheated sitting on top of my melting pot while the lead below melts.

For best results I hold the mould sideways; put the dipper spout into the sprue plate, and then rotate the dipper and mould until they are upright and then quickly remove the spout so the weight of the lead does not force the lead into the vent lines.

How much variation do you get in a hundred .32 bullets, Dave?

I cast 100 bullets yesterday and weighed them today.  Pot was reading 850 degrees with my cheapie TelTru thermometer.  Weight ranged from 190.4 gr to 191.0 gr.  Had a few with whiskers but most were ok.  I usually get a few with the "cold lap" as Joe said, but not for this session.  This mold (aluminum)seems to be getting better with more use.  No special treatment and pre-heat on the kitchen stove.

J.Feldman what alloy ?  Nice looking bullets. Looks quite similar to my J.Borton mold.

These are out of my brass mold. Same bullets one under exposed and one over exposed Smiley

I had to clean it about 3 times and run them about 800 deg, casting both cavity's, fairly fast.

Cavities cut that rough or actual casting issues Frank its hard to tell. I also noticed the parting lines on both yours and Joe's moulds to be a bit more than usual. Maybe just the alignment pins are a bit out of adjustment.

I'm supprized that you can't tell the difference between roughness and bullet lube.

It is the first target, type bullet. Ideal made the 25719, they first called the Sharpe Point bullet but, it was a game bullet so that the pelts wouldn't be as effected as flat points.

It does seem to have opened the gates to a rash of spitzers though. 311329, 311365, 320366, 287377, even the 257388. I'm sure I missed some other numbers, too.

It's not smart ass, the bullet lube is what your seeing as roughness.

That should be good nuf  Grin  That is about what I do too.  Those rows of bullets sure look good don't they?  Lot better than a pile of ingots  Roll Eyes
