32-40 loads

Picked up a ol Hi Wall that was rebarreled in 32-40. What would be a good smokeless load for a 170gr cast bullet?

Start at about 13.7grs of 300MP and move up from there. For a 200gr. bullet 14.2 to 14.4 is usually where the sweet spot is found. Fed. 210 primers would also be a good place to start with Win. Mag. Primers also doing very well.

If you are shooting fixed loads, try about 14gr. to 14 1/2gr. of IMR4227. That Federal primer is a good one, but others are all right too. I wouldn't bother with crimp, but play around with seating depth to see what works.
There's a zillion loads that work in this caliber- it's pretty easy to get pleasing results with. Look in older books, or on the internet. Others here will offer advice, too. Probably. Sooner or later, you may want to try breech seating, and that above load will probably work to start out there, too.
Anyhow, I bet yer gonna like the new rifle, and I hope you soon come back to tell us how you're doing. Enjoy.

Of all the rifles I have had I have not had a 32-40. Read a lot about them and there inherent accuracy. These loads are a place to start. Thanks

If you can find some of the IMR 4759 try that at about 14.0 grs with a 165 grain bullet. This powder has been discontinued again but it appears permanently as it doesn't allow for modern manufacturing methods (bean counters at work here) according to IMR. As always start low and work up. Frank

I've had good success with 12 to 13 grains of 2400 under a 165 grain Rapine plain base bullet in a High Wall, a Ballard, and several Winchester and Marlin lever actions.

I may have passed my "Best Before" date, but I haven't quite reached my "Expiry" date yet ...

There's gotta be some 4759 out there somewhere that you could beg, borrow, or steal.  Thirteen point six grains worked for me behind everything from 165 to 200 grain bullets... and I used it both for fixed and breech seated loads in a couple of high walls (one original and one with Green Mountain barrel) as well as a rebarreled Ruger #1.

Question on John Wayne Winchester 32-40 Ammo ? Is it safe to Shoot in Vintage S.S. Rifles ?. I'm 99% sure a while back I used some through my Hopkins & Allen Action without a problem . I also have a Remington Hepburn that was just relined from 32-20 to 32-40 and it looks like a Stronger action . I know I have More of that ammo but have been worried about using it . Do you think I should use it ? Was it loaded with lower pressures than modern Ammo ?   Thanks , Bruce

The stuff they loaded with lead bullets is all right. The jacketed bullet version is of the high velocity (for a .32-40) variety, and probably not a good idea in some old guns. I have shot both in my high wall, but that's the only twenty rounds of jacketed ammo I've ever used in it. Neither slug shot very well, if I remember correctly. Still have a box an a half of the lead version.

Thanks , If I remember right they didn't fly straight for me and I blamed it on my Sights or Myself. So I'll take a look at what I've got.
Thanks ,Bruce
