IMR 3031 any good for 38-55?

Print Post
I have several pounds of IMR 3031 and am not using it. In view of the fact that 4759 is no longer available, I am wondering if anyone has been able to get good accuracy with it. I see it listed in all the major reloading manuals but I don't hear much about it at the firing line. Is anyone having any good luck with it?
Thanks!

I use 3031 and 4895 for hunting loads, and find them equally up to the task.

I've used 3031 for many years for full loads in my 30-30 and my 38-55. It doesn't work for trying to duplicate the reduced loads that 4759 does. 5744 powder does a good job of filling the niche left open when 4759 was retired.

3031 is my go to powder for my 38-55 using jacketed bullets in my Model 94.  I also use it in my Stevens 44 1/2 in 25/35 and my 30-40 Krag Borchardt

The use of 3031 in the 38-55 probably should be confined to modern rifles like the Winchester 1894.  Cutting 3031 loads back to black powder velocities in most cartridges puts the powder at the very low end of the pressure curve and they get erratic at cooler temperatures.  Case in point is my 45-70 Sharps.  I worked up a great load using 3031 in the summer, but it gave a shotgun pattern below 20 degrees. For hunting with that rifle I now use a duplex load.  IMR 4198 seems to work quite well with cast bullets and I use it in my 38-55 loads.  Shoots fine in the winter.

Thanks for the replies!
I am only interested in target loads for use in competition, so cold weather would not be an issue.
If anyone has had good results with it for a match load, let me know.
thanks!
