need 28-30 Stevens load information

Recently a fellow in our car club's dad died and several of us were invited over to the west side of the state to see his rifle and shotgun collection, over 300, before they were offered for sale to the public. To make a long story a little shorter I bought a Stevens 44 in 28-30 that looked better there then when I got it home! Thanks to Redsetter I learned that the barrel had been cut and the rifling is a little weak but the action seems to lock up tight and I'd like to at least shoot it. I bought some cases from the Robertson Cartridge Company, delivered in two weeks just as they promised, some .285 135 gr bullets from a place up east and as I have 4227, 4198 & 4759 on hand I'm hoping one of you can recommend a light load for this rifle. Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the reply! I did a search on this website and nothing came up, probably bad choice of wording on my part. If I get no replies over the week end I'll give Paul Shuttleworth a call next week but I really hate to bother him.

Enter this " (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links) 28-30 loads" in google's search bar.  It responds much better than the site search above.

I shoot a 28-30 on a Stevens 44 action.  I use 11.3 grains of SR-4759 and a pistol primer with a breech-seated 140 grain Hoch bullet cast about 30:1.  The 44 action is not strong and usually has a wimpy mainspring.  Mine will not set off rifle primers.  It is easy to make a plugged case for a breech-seating tool.  Just put a wooden dowel in an empty case and leave about 1/16" of wood ahead of the case mouth.  The 11.3 grains is a starting point.  MAYBE you can get a bit more accuracy by increasing the load by a few tenths, but go slow.

Thanks for the replies fellows! I guess that I'll have to get my grandaughter over to operate this "thing" as I couldn't get the link to work.

Jagfolks, what you can do, about the same as Schuetzenmeister says, is just do a google search using the words he mentioned. Or, a variant of the same- ASSRA forum rather than YaBB forum- for instance. I don't search here very often, but I've found this way better than trying the search found on this site.  Lots out there on this round in other spots as well. You'll be fine, and good shootin,

You need to copy and paste what is in quotes to google search.  This will show up:

Great, I'll take it, thanks   Cheesy

Any web site can be searched that way, but most have a fairly good search function.  Copy and past the site URL into the google search bar.  Use th home page unless you want to search a certain section of the site.  Follow it with a colon.  Type in what ever you want to search for.

All you really need in the Google search box is "assra 28-30".

normal weight used in the past was 130-135 grains
12.5 grains of 4227, velocity may be close to 1600 fps.

That shorter version search turns up more irrelevant garbage.  Not much to sort through in this case, but a higher volume of data it would probably be significant.
