Made 22LR Shot Shells - For Giggles & Pidgeons!

Ordered a bag of #4 gelatin capsules and reloading is a piece of cake - if you have nimble fingers:
* Plug a Lee 0.3cc dipper to drop 1.23grs of Bullseye
* Fill primed empty 22LR case with powder from dipper
* Separate the capsule and fill with #12 shot
* Close capsule
* Insert the capsule into the primed case with the short end into the case 'First"
* Short end of the capsule forms a tight seal in the case
* Move capsule down in the case so the COAL length is 0.980, same length as a standard 22LR ... Done!

OK - Next venture ... load a box of 50 shot shells:
* Put 50 primed empty cases in an empty Win 209 primer tray
* With the plugged 0.03cc Lee dipper, fill each case
* Then fill 50 capsules with #12 shot
* Again, seat the filled capsules in the 22LR case. I don't have to measure the COAL of the reloads because there is a top band on the capsule that just below is 0.980"  Smiley
Put the reloads in an empty 22LR box = Done
* Total reloading time for 50 shotshells = a tad over 45 minutes
* Number of pieces of shot in one capsule = 169

That's neat. Pity that it's illegal to kill pigeons here. Really, it is. The city council must be protecting the other species that craps on us all day long besides themselves.

Used to was that you could buy tiny clay pigeons and a small sit-on-it thrower for those things.  Back in the 1950s.

I have heard that shooting dragonflies is a fun sport, unless you might be a dragonfly on your next incarnation.

Don't have one of those but I do have a Stevens Crack Shot 26 smooth bore, Remington 510 Smooth Bore, Remington 510 Rutledge Bore, and Remington 580 Smooth bore. Use them for snakes and birds in my shed.

It's actually Routledge.

Anyway, the mad invention of one Fred Routledge, it consists of the last 12" or so of a .22 barrel being bored out to 0.375".  Theoretically, this overbore allows the tiny shot payload in a .22 shot shell to stop spinning in a rifled bore or to open smoothly in a sort of jug choke effect in a fully smooth bore.  Again, theoretically, the Routledge bore enables the .22 Shot cartridge to be effective at 15 yards or so, about four times farther than a straight .22 barrel, smooth or rifled, is able to deliver a useful pattern.  Theoretically.

I can see that a still hunter or one of our local poachers might see all sorts of possibilities with that.  A traditional poacher that is, not one who has switched to a large bore air rifle.

Where do you source your primed cases?

Back in 2002, Hunting Shack had 9 cans of primed empty 22LR cases.  They sold like hot cakes and a source for more is nonexistent unless one wants to order 500,000 from Aquila

I ordered a few thousand from a company online for Neal Rice who was working on breech seating 22s, to circumvent someone else creating the always present flyers. Unfortunatly Neal was never able to see the project to fruition. If my memory is functioning, I believe they were Armscor (sp).

It was Armscor, and I checked to see if they still offered them, was told they were out of stock. Didn't know when they would be back in stock.
