32 Ideal mold?
May 20th, 2018 at 9:42am
Print Post
As part of a deal on unused molds a few years ago I own what I think is a copy of a 32 360. The  description is:

32360. "This series of bullets is intended for rifles using the .32 Ideal cartridges, for light and heavy weights. Shape of point is standard and they will seat all right with the regular tools for .32 Ideal cartridges. (PB, FN, 75, 100, 125, 150, 175, 200, 225 - TP is 295)"
The blocks I have are cut for a single cavity marked 322 360

I can not find any other reference that comes close.
Ideas?

Here are a few pictures of this mold. I think it is for the 32 Ideal. I have never even held a rifle chambered in 32 Ideal! Not a common bird.
Maybe the mold will turn out to get some use in one of my 32's.

I have seen such moulds listed in late 1800s loading manuals but never had a clue as to how they were used to produce bullets in weights from 100 gr. to much heavier. I remain mystified.

However, looking at our post I begin to think that bullets were cast by pouring varying amounts of Pb in and then using a shear cutter of some kind to cut off the unwanted extra weight. I have never seen such a tool (could it be nothing more than a heavy bladed knife with a one-sided edge?).

However, I have for some years shortened 0,321" soft cast 165gr bullets in this manner to give me 110gr 0,321" pistol bullets that group very well up to 100M from a Swedish revolver.

I think it was a mater of getting the mold in the weight you need or want.

I think the cherry is just adjusted "into or out of" the uncut blocks for the weight intended and the rear part of the cherry is not in the blocks if a full length bullet mold is not being made.

This mold, like other Ideal molds offered/available in more then one weight are that way too, and I have had ones that were lighter than the heaviest one listed, if you get what I am saying.

Illustration from the 1900 Ideal catalog shows how the Perfection mold adjusted for different bullet lengths.

By posting this, are you thinking this was offered as a perfection mold?

I could not tell just from the wood cut or old half tone..... what every this old image is from.

According to the 1900 Ideal catalog, from which came that line cut, the 32360 was part of the "Perfection" series of molds.
The 32360 was also offered in that catalog as a fixed length mold in various weights. Remember, in those days, all Ideal molds had the mold block and handle in one piece (see photo below) .Mold blocks being separate from the handles such a we have today did not appear until some years later.

Thank you for the reply and help. It is good information.

Right..on the one piece blocks and handle.  So it was offered as both the Perfection mold, and as any named (catalog) weigh or length.
This Lyman copy I have could have been some kind of non-catalog, special request mold maybe. This is assuming the Lyman marked block and the newer mold number.

CW, that bullet was offered in the Perfection mold. My old mentor had one, and while trying different bullets in my (then) new to me .32-40 it was one that I gave a go. Later, when he passed on, I could have got whatever I wanted from his estate, but I passed on that one. Not that I remember it shooting badly, but because I had so much trouble casting with that mold with its long screw hanging out the bottom. I dipped it into the pot, I snagged it getting it out, I bumped it on everything on the bench, and I generally fu... messed up the whole casting session. I think I know why those molds are scarce....... Angry

Your Lyman mold blocks would not be a copy of the Ideal bullet because Lyman purchased Ideal and continued their line of reloading/casting products. Your mold may well have been cut with an Ideal cherry left over from old tooling. I find it hard to imagine why Lyman would go through the effort to make a new cherry for a bullet like that which would have at best, a limited market.
I'm old enough to vaguely remember, years ago, when Lyman offered to cut molds for any cherry they still had on hand. Perhaps your mold was from that time?
You have a nice old Lyman mold, I hope it casts good bullets and is accurate in your rifle(s). Do you by any chance know the bullet length and approximate as-cast bullet weight?

I have some issues regarding this mold.

1. The stamping on the blocks. Miss-stamped, with way larger 3 and a different font. The PB (not sure it's PB) in the bottom rt corner and possibly no block matching numbers. A better picture of the markings, would be helpful.

2. If you'll look close, you'll see that the last two bands, are wider the the rest of the body bands. They should all be the same.

Could this mold be a made from blank Lyman blocks, cut by a custom mold maker? It's very similar to the 32360 but, not the same.

Also, do all the bands cast the same diameter, or do the last two bands, cast larger? The 32360 is suppose to cast all bands at .323.

Hope you don't mind, I ran your posted photos through Photo Shop to bring out some more detail. The modified images may shed a little light on the comments posted.
To me, your mold looks to be in new, unused condition. Is that your opinion? You have examined the actual objects and I have not.

Here are pictures of my 32360 bullet mold by Ideal.  My rifle is Winchester Highwall with double set triggers.  It is not very pretty but shows some promise.  Sorry about the picture size.

That extra big "3" seems a bit odd.  It is hard to see in the shadow, but is the "LYMAN" centered on the block?
