Non lead casting alloy

My brother lives in California and will soon be confronted with having to use non-lead bullets for hunting, June of 2019. Years ago I gave him a hiwall in 45-70 that he used to hunt with me in Wyoming. My question is, is anyone aware of a successful non lead alloy for casting bullets? In my limited search, it appears that a no lead babbit metal might work, as it has about the same melting temperature, albeit lighter and harder. If anyone could shed some light on this problem any replies would be greatly appreciated. I of course mentiond moving as the best solution, but that is not in the cards, grandchildren, lifelong friends etc.     thanks Krag

Jlouis - thanks much for your reply. I did look it up, and it is 88%  Bismuth 12% tin, at about $16 per lb. Pricey, but maybe the only choice for now, worth a try. One review, said that he was able to get high velocity in an 06, but a net weight reduction of 29%. I will order some and see what happens. Again thanks  Krag

colo native - thanks for your reply. I did check on it, but from what I could find, it does contain 29% lead, so would not workn for this situation.  Krag

Well, there is pure tin, pewter, and other alloys that are quite castable.
Even zinc -- there used to be a bunch of pistol shooters using that.  Don't use it in a lead pot that you may want to use again, tho.   Or machine slugs out of bronze or copper.

I dont know what casting zinc bullets would be like, but I remember them being around for a while. I was given a couple hundred zinc pistol bullets about thirty years back. I cannot recall the weight, but I shot 'em in a .44spl Colt that I was fond of. They shot pretty well, and I was sorry when they were gone. It was one of the few times I liked hard bullets in anything. For what it's worth.....

Trump revoked the lead Ban but I am not sure if Ca. Is going to honor it and if caught the first offense is a $500.00 fine but not sure if you also loose your hunting privlages I didn't see it clearly stated.

Jlouis - Sure glad I moved. It turns out that RotoMetals is only 30 miles or so from my brother, and he is coming to visit late May, so pehaps he can bring it for me to try, and save shipping. Of course it is possible that there is an export fee to try to boost the states coffers!   Thanks again  Krag

When buying from RotoMetals any purchase over 99.00.and the shipping is free should you have a need of what they have to offer for your self someday. They have been staunch supporters for our yearly ISSA Regionals and freely donanting Hats, T-Shirts and 5lb. Bars of premixed alloys yearly for our prize by raffel tables.

A friend went through this a few years ago. He cast some bullets out of pure tin and took them to DF&G here in CA. They had them tested and gave him some sort of certified document that he was to show any wardens that checked him.

He said the tin bullets shot horrible, but looking at loaded ammo you really couldn't tell the difference between the tin and lead alloy bullets.  Wink

Personally I wouldn't risk his approach, but would check with DF&G about getting some type of paperwork from them to show in the field. A warden looking at lead-free ammo would probably not believe they weren't lead.

The current copper hunting bullets (Barnes and Hornady) for 45-70 seem to work quite well.

I'd definitely look for a way to test if the lead-free casting alloy holds together on impact.

Just curious as to how they are going to field check this? Similar to Illinois rules that require handgun deer hunting ammo has to have 500 Foot pounds of energy. Put your ammo in the correct factory ammo box and are they going to take your ammo to a lab and test it? Same with lead bullets. Enforcement could be interesting and you are supposed to be innocent untill proven guilty in this country.

Ban lead, and only outlaws will have it. Again thanks to all, and I have taken notes of your suggestions. KRAG
