Been waiting 4 years with Buffalo Arms to get some .28-30 brass in, might have to turn my own on the lathe unless somebody out there has some that they could sell?
Thanks, Tom

I believe Roberson Cartridge Co. has them, but they aren't cheap.

Holy Cow!!  Not cheap is an understatement.  How are they made?  Some turned from brass rod, but others?  And there is a lot there that can be made from existing brass, just will not have their nifty headstamp.

That rant over, the 28-30 brass might well be a reasonable purchase if it does not split.

You are not kidding "not cheap" but for machined cart. brass that is annealed properly, it can't be cheap!

I have a 28-30 myself and have learned the hard way about finding good brass for it.  Bertram is at the bottom of my list and the OP is probably lucky that he can't get any.  The original brass you find will range from great to useless so plan on some loss with the first firing.  I had heard about the 6x70R Norma brass but was too late to get any so bought some loaded ammo to get the brass.  You get some loss there, too, but I now have a method to repair split necks.  The Rocky Mtn brass is reasonably priced and I was going to order some but never got around to it since I have plenty of others now.  I read about RCC here:

I have need of 44-90 Peabody brass which is another tough one.  I contacted RCC and I think I will spring for 20 cases to get me going while I work on making my own from 475 #2 and 460 Wby brass.  They claim to use a "hammer forged" C260 brass to make their cases. C260 is 70-30 cartridge brass and is the right stuff.  I don't know if Rocky Mtn uses 260 or 360 brass, but I would ask them.  There is a great deal of difference in physical properties.  There was a thread a while back also about reforming 30-06 cases and someone used to do that in the 1980s.  If I ever get caught up with my other projects I plan to make the dies and see how well they work. 223 to 25-20 single shot works well so I have hope.

Hell froze over for a short time last year, and during the hiatus I was able to bid on some original brass on Gunbroker.  It went for something around $5.00 each, so the RCC price isn't out of line.

Personally, I had no difficulty with converting the Norma 6mm brass.  I may have been lucky, or it may be because I used a mandrel having a very long taper to expand it.  That may also have been just luck - having no other 7mm dies, I machined one from a .30 caliber Lee expander, which has a pretty long taper to begin with.

Could you expand on the method for repairing split necks, please.

This works for cracks and will not fill a large gap.  So far the cases I have done this to have survived several firings.  You need this solder:
(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)
and an induction annealer/heater.  A jeweler's micro torch might work.  You have to be sure the head area of the case does not reach the recrystallization temp of cartridge brass (~300C/575F) so have a wet sponge to hold the case and a pan of water nearby.  Apply a minimal amount of solder paste to the crack(s) and heat area with the induction heater until the solder flows, quenching the case immediately in the water pan.  Use an outside neck turner to remove the excess solder and make the neck thickness otherwise uniform.  It isn't much.  In a pinch you could do it with a needle file.  In the end, you have a case neck that has been annealed to a higher temperature than what is best, but you have salvaged useless case.  All this is obviously foolish if you can get good brass, but if you can't, then decide if you want to shoot that rifle or look at it.

RMC is $3.25 a case.  For that price, ould have no issues waiting 2-3 months for the production run

Thank you Ten-Mile.  Seems like a fairly simple operation, but I never thought about trying something like that.

I have wondered if it would be feasible to turn the webs down on 30-30 cases and re-draw them in a split die, to make 28-30's.   Not having been confronted with the need for any, haven't pursued the idea.

Fellow just earlier listed around 40 pieces in the for sale section for a pretty fair price.
