Here is one you dont see every day A friend loaned it to me to be copied it has some use and abuse but a very rare and I think cool design, almost every thing pivots on the one 1/4 inch screw. the lever, extractor the hammer and by way of the lever the breechblock. It is in 577-450 patented by John Aston Instructor at Hythe School of musketry.

Very interesting action, great set of pictures. Thanks for taking the time to share them, along with the other projects you show. Just curious, do you use a 3D scanner to measure up and record the parts? Anyway, thanks again.

Thanks, Rodney. Different action and an interesting approach.
Machining that lever would keep you out of the bars and pool-halls for a while.

A very sleek and sexy action.  At the same time, I was taught that secure engagement required at least three threads, a criterion the literally pivotal 1/4" screw seems to barely meet.  Were someone going to reproduce the action, I'd strongly recommend adding a locking screw to that pivot.

Yes having to machine one of the levers would show you the difference between a good machinist and a great one. Although I believe they started from a forging then chiseled as you can still see inside marks , then machined and filed to shape. when I made the molds I made the sidewalls 1/16 inch thicker so should help on the screw depth. It is a fairly light action also has a Large receiver but hollowed out a lot. No do not use a 3D scanner that would be awesome.

Your comment about chisel work is interesting.
There is a cut on a Brochardt and a couple on a Farrow that can only be properly made with a chisel or EDM.
A chisel was the standard way to cut key-ways at the time and chipping was an important part of apprentice training.
Another lost skill like buggy whip making except for engravers and some die sinkers.

Just got my Aston parts and trying to decide on a caliber. What do you think about 297-230 Morris long? Any opinions? Barrel? Reamer? Stock preference? Loads? Pressures? Scope choice? Inquiring minds need to know!

James, I have a reamer and Buffalo arms has the brass. It is a 22 caliber by the way. That would be quite the over kill such a large action for such a small cartridge , lol.

Decisions, decisions! I like 14 flea too, 380 necked to 14 cal. My friend had a rook in that one time. 12 grain bullets. It would be massive fun! An elephant of a beast at the range. Rodney's, what is the hoop strength? Would we be stretching it? Later moodymustafha

I think you should run the 297/230 Short to help tame the recoil  Grin
