H. Pieper Marksman

I recently bought an H. Pieper Marksman rifle via on-line auction.  The barrel shows: "380" but no other caliber designation.  I presume it to be 380 rimfire, but not sure.  I don't have the rifle yet.  The rifle will need refinishing and stock work but overall, it looks pretty good for a project. Frank DeHass did not like the strength of this action.   I may reline it or rechamber if the barrel is okay.  Any opinion on a low pressure 38, 32 long or maybe 22 lr as potential calibers?  Does anyone have experience or advice on this rifle?

It is probably .380 long centre fire---a standard British rook rifle calibre. If that is the case, it will either need the correct heeled bullet or it may well work with 38 Special hollow base wad cutters. It all depends on the groove diameter and there is a lot of variation on these rifles. If around .372", then the HBWC load will work, but many .380s are .375" or more and the hollow base bullet just won't expand enough. Accurate do a superb heeled bullet which you can use with cut down .38 Special brass or use .38 S&W brass as I do.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

Isn't it possible it's simply the old .38 Long RF cartridge?
