Again with thanks to all who commented and gave good advice few months ago.

About finished tooling up, last piece was a good condition Steady Rest off EBay .  Did some small jobs and have cut lots of external threads, some good internal threads too. Tuning to precise dims, better than I did with my old Atlas too. Have good indicator set ups for all types of jobs, working off the indicator and dial was new to me, less chance for screw ups.

Next real project buy a junk .22 Rimfire barrel & a reamer. Going to set it up, chamber, cut the end off and do it again and again. May find one with a action that I can practice complete barrel fit up. Better learn on a junker.

Been a lot of fun,

Boats.

Sounds like you got a dandy. As noted, more $ in tooling than the lathe.

Good plan. Screwed up my first .22 rimfire chamber.

The way I've been shooting my rebarreled 3rd Musket (low wall) maybe I ought to let you have it to practice on.  Oh wait, it's probably just the nut on the butt... Never Mind!!  Roll Eyes

I believe in junkers.  Friend of mine and I went haves on a beat up cut barrel Parker Shotgun. Took it apart put it back together dozen times. Then sold it off for what we paid. Cheap education.

And there are a lot of junkers out there to teach a fella a lot of lessons.      Wink

There are three kinds of men: The ones that learn by reading, the few who learn by observation, and the rest who have to pee on the electric fence and find out for themselves.

Many years ago best home gunsmith advice I ever had was from my high school shop teacher. Practice on a junk gun.

The best learning tool for the aspiring Single Shot gunsmith, IMHO, is a wrecked Stevens Favorite.

The stock can be made out of a hardwood board, much cheaper than a stock blank, the internals are easily made or modified (or improved), the frame is a great thing to experiment on with polishing and finishing and any junk takeoff .22 barrel can be modified to fit.

Anything spoiled can be thrown out, done over or parted out with little financial loss and a vast gain in experience, which can be applied to any of the larger single shot rifles.

I've recently bought insert type turning tools from Banggood.  For instance, a 1.5 mm parting tool was under $8 dollars and seems as good as the $100 versions from MSC.  Their magnetic base, led machine lights at $17 are very nice at $17 ea.  Bought 3!

Sure it's from China and takes a while to get here.  Check it out.  Someone steered me to them and I'm thankful.
