Measuring Dovetail Slots, My New Toy

Always wanted one of these, Starrett Taper Gage and found a use for it.  Blades are .012 thick, each line is .001 and so I need to come up with a constant to add to get the Corner to Corner measurement.  Boys and Their Toys!....

Would it work to simply bevel the edges to a standard dovetail angle to fit the corners?
I'm no machinist so just asking.

Thought about that but it is getting too small for my world.  Kind of a hammer guy.  I am thinking a Right Triangle solution would be easier for it.  I just don't like Math!  David

I don't know what the typical dovetail angle is but you could find a constant using the formula;
constant=0.012/tangent of angle X 2

For example if the angle is 60' it would be .012/(square root of 3) x 2 =0.0138

I think so anyway

For years I've simply used a piece of shim stock I cut to be tapered from 5/16" on one end to 1/2" on the other. I slip it in and use a pencil to mark it. Then use my micrometer to read at the pencil mark. Always worked great for me. A piece of soda pop can works well as shim stock to make these also. You can cut it with scissors.

One thing you have to consider, regarding dovetails, is that the corner is a nominal dimension. They're suppose to be measured between pins. The corner of a DT envelope's a radius as the cutter wears so, I really like that taper gauge and may have to get one, myself. Using it and doing the math for the corner, should make cutting larger DT's a breeze.

I usually use Marlinguy's technique, which is fast & accurate enough for my needs.  For other methods, click on the link below to see my article titled, Measuring Dovetail Slot Dimensions.
