For every other case but this one, your techniques rule. The fact that the .25 firing pin will usually also hit the rim of a .22 makes this one unique.

I just reviewed this entire thread again looking at load data. Some of you guys have done a lot of research which his greatly appreciated.

I need to decide on a starting load. Potentially suitable powders I have on hand are Unique, Trail Boss, RL7, APP, BH209, 231, and various black powders.  I have 50gr Hunter Supply bullets and some 60 or 65 grain bullets coming.

A case full of 3F APP is probably the easiest and safest starting point.  I've also had very good results with RL7 and BH209 in pistol size cases and other rimfires I've done.

This is for a #4 rolling block. I'm open to suggestions Smiley

Thanks,
Steve

In the reformed Hornet case I like 1.9 grains of Bullseye.  Of the powders you listed I'd go for 1.9 grains of 231.  The others are too slow for this tiny case.  The reformed Hornet is about two grains of water smaller than the rimfire case.

I’ve also used bullseye, at 1.8 grains with the 50 grain bullet. Basically a .25 acp load.

Thanks guys. Unfortunately no Bullseye, I've just never had a use for it before.  I may have others that are suitable, I'm at the office today and don't recall for sure.  I'll look when I get home to see if I missed anything.

You have WW231, which is close enough as no matter.

I now have 4 different versions to try, all using the .258" diameter, 49gr Hunter Supply bullet. L-R:

Reloadable case made from .22 Hornet. .22 starter pistol blank primer, 1.9gr WW 231.

Converted .17WSM rimfire case, 1.9gr WW 231.

Medium length .17WSM case. These were cases that the neck split when trying to expand. They were cut off at the shoulder and are now .925" vs 1.125" for .25 Stevens. Loaded with 5.8gr APP 3F.

Brown #2 .27 cal nail gun blank. Bullet will be breech seated.

I hope to get to the range Friday afternoon to try them out. I'll bring the chronograph.

Steve

I was digging around in my spare parts last night and found a spare #4 roller breech block. I see a centerfire conversion in its future  Grin Converting .22 Hornet brass to .25 Stevens centerfire is much easier than converting it to rimfire.

Sure is!

Converting a .32 rimfire block is tougher than a .22 rimfire, but it can be done.  I've done a 1915 Favorite, so it now handles .32 Colt CF quite well.

Meanwhile I've swapped a centefire breechblock into my .25 caliber Model 44 . Only function-fired so far as my bad back has precluded any range or even chrono testing.

Go for the centerfire, you'll never be sorry. They shoot great. I made a. 25 Stevens centerfire on a Remington cadet action and it is a great squirrel rifle.

According to my Quickload studies, over 1700 fps should be possible with a 60 grain bullet.   Best powders for this look to be magnum pistol types; Blue Dot, 2400, AA#9, 4100, Enforcer.

(Strong rifles only, not for most boys' rifles. Pressure is ~ 20kpsi.)

Personally I'm inclined to keep to ~1400 fps, and plain base bullets.  Pressures drop to ~ 12000 psi.  if you use AA#7 or 2400.  Still not safe in boys' rifles. Well, maybe your #4 roller if it's good and tight.  Maybe a tight 1915 Favorite, but definitely not an 1894.  I'm going on results from my bolt thrust calculator.

I think I bought this extra block off ebay years ago. I didn't have a use for it at the time, but the price was too good to pass up. Since I'm a roller guy, I grabbed jt for future use - then forgot about it,  Grin

Lately I've gotten into making a variety of rimfire cases (.44 long, .56-50, .41 rimfire short etc), I enjoy the challenge of it. But I will get this block converted, then it can be dropped into any #4, including this one.

Fortunately this little #4 has had little use and the takedown is tight. But regardless, I have no intention of pushing it beyond original .25 Stevens velocity.

If the weather holds, I'll head to the range to try these loads out  Smiley

Never pass up spare parts!

Which is why I can barely get into my gun-room..... Grin

I went to the range today and tried out the little #4 rifle. The velocities for three different loads are:

Cases made from .22 Hornet. Loaded with 1.9gr of W231, starter pistol blank and 49gr bullet -1150fps avg.

Cases made from .17WSM cut down to the start of the shoulder, .925" long. Loaded with 5.8gr APP 3F, 49gr bullet - 807fps avg.

Breech seated 49gr bullet powered by a .27 cal brown #2 nail gun blank - 1223fps avg.

The 49gr bullet is light for this cartridge. A normal 60-70gr bullet would result in slightly lower velocities.

Here is a video of the fun.

Great video, thanks for doing this one. I was a bit surprised at the higher velocity you achieved with the brown nail gun load, the green ones seemed quite mild in my 44 1/2.

I recently bought a stripped Stevens model 44 high serial number frame cheap, yesterday I received a late model full round .25 Stevens barrel I bought from a guy off of gunbroker. Sometimes  you get lucky, it had a shiny excellent bore, plus it indexes perfectly in my frame. I have all of the parts to put together a rifle except the hammer and trigger, it would be nice to have a centerfire breech block to make it a centerfire version of .25 Stevens, but I do have a .25 RF breech block to use, or I could swap out a centerfire block from another rifle temporarily.
