I was just curious as mine is a 38001. Yours sounded similar except that perhaps I wouldn't describe mine as having a super long nose.

Chris:

Didn't Dan T. have Paul Jones cut moulds with shallower grooves to reduce drag?

Normally most of Paul Jones moulds had deeper wider grooves.

38001 was listed as a 365 grain Creedmore
38009 was not listed on Paul Jones old web site.
Is it a Creedmore or Elliptical nose?

Dave

Dave I am pretty sure it's an elliptical nose.  Dan definitely did some experimenting and got Paul to do a bunch of different groove designs.  I suspect that this was after a paper written by Richard Gunn on the drag ( and stabilization ) effects of lube grooves.  I know that they spoke about a number of things related to ballistics.

I wonder if the big lube grooves on a lot of modern molds are a modern invention?  I have a few molds made by Zischang shortly before he retired and they have quite tiny grooves.  If I remember correctly, they measured at less than a mini-groove.

Buffalo Arms makes a number of mini-groove molds ( copies of the PJ molds basically ) too.  I have a few and they work quite well.  I think a lot of bullets probably have too much lube capacity.

He shoots both a .40-65 and a .45-70 with BP in a RKS gain twist barrel on 1885 HighWalls.
He is ranked a Master again with the new standards.

What are the "new standards" for making master?

Here are the first results from my 38-50 Hepburn with a Bartlein gain-twist barrel. 32.375" long and 16.5 to 11" twist. This is off the bench at 200yd with a 6X scope. I made no allowance for wind as I was only interested in up & down for this first test. All ammo was fully engaged in the rifling (close to BS'g, but with fixed ammo) with 2F Swiss. As is shown, 3 of 4 were under 1moa at 200yd. Now if I can do my part. Bullets were a 340gr Brooks and a 363gr BACo Money M4 bullet. The one that shot just over 1moa is a BACo 330gr Money bullet. Looks like 52gr & 56gr of powder works well. I'll post a pic of the bullets is anyone is interested. I've never run a patch down a barrel with less drag than this Bartlein. Wish I had a bore-scope to look at it compared to a few others I've got. With Bartlein's CNC rifling machine you can pick any gain-twist you wish. Also, this barrel is 5R rifling.

The standard for Master is now 31 to 40 BPCR Silhouettes.

Wasn't that more than 10yr ago? 'New' to me is generally more recent than that, so was wondering if there might have been a different change north of the border.

LOL.......... you're right. Especially now that I've made SS (super-senior). One of those things you are glad you make even if you can't shoot any better.
