Meacham highwall through bolt

Hi,

Does anyone have a picture of how the through bolt is set up on a Meacham 1885 action?  I think I remember seeing something about it screwing into a part threaded onto the rear tang screw.

I want to swap the existing Riflesmith sight for an MVA but am wondering if removing the rear tang screw will require me to remove the through bolt.

thanks,

Chris.

Chris, I believe he used a 1/4 rod coupling that was drilled for the tang screw to pass through and the through bolt was threaded into that; 4/1-20 threads.  I believe a 3/16 Allen wrench will loosen it. Sorry, no pictures, I kn ow I had to remove the tang screw to put my sight on about 20 years ago.

Thanks that helped.   I got the sights swapped.  I ended up loosening the through bolt almost completely, but left the threads engaged just enough to keep the rod coupling from moving much.

Interestingly the rear tang screw shank has slightly different dimensions than the one that comes with the MVA sight.  It's larger and tapers differently.

I ended up sticking with the original screw even though it engages the lower tang threads about one half to one turn less.  Hopefully that's not a problem.

Thanks very much,

Chris.

Thanks for confirming that, Chris. I'll take the credit but I'm not sure if it was memory or a good guess.   Undecided
