Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

I got a copy at Raton.  Fantastic book! He deserves a big hand of applause for doing it.

A couple years before John finished the book I looked at his pile of documentation at Denver from 25 years of gathering Ballard data and info! The stack was probably 3 ft. tall, and he said he had enough data to put together 4 books. After the book came out he was exhausted by the process and said he'd likely never do a follow up book. But last year he made some comments that indicated he wasn't totally against the idea if it could really be a great follow up version.
Many people encouraged him to at least do a 2nd printing of the original, as it would throw wrench in the profiteer's works, and allow the next generation of Ballard fans to get a reasonably priced copy.
I have a huge library of gun related books, and regardless of subject matter, none are as well written as Dutcher's Ballard book in my opinion.

What I would do to get to the bottom of the hammer issue is:
1. Assemble the breechblock half and only half with                                                                                                                             trigger assy.
2. Make sure you can see the internal workings,
3. Pull hammer back to see how it all comes together,
4. Evaluate exactly what is not working correctly, You should be able to see it,
5. Either sear or hammer notch is not catching. Probably sear,
6. Reshape sear nose,
7. Retry cocking hammer to see that you have corrected the problem...

Don  When apart i did just as you suggest while i figured our how to replace the sear spring that she worked fine--  it was when i joined the 2 halves of the breechblock together and screwed them together it started missing the catch again --   I cant see any signs of binding  and i noticed the lower tip of the sear spring is inlet on its lower side to clear the trigger arm so I am sure i got it fitted right but then this started before i opened it up

possibly over tightened hammer screw  collapsing the side half. either side. Try unscrewing the hammer screw 1 turn and see if it all starts working properly
