My 32-40 Ballard with a prong butt plate and palm rest is my CF offhand rifle of choice. It balances well and puts the shots right where the sights are pointed at.  Too bad I am usually pointing at some where outside the 20 ring!

My 1885 Winchester HighWalls with skeletonized hammers, coil springs, and free floated barrels were great for offhand.

They fit well, were well balanced, had good triggers and with modifications their slightly lower lock time was of no concern.

Worst single shot for offhand is the BSA Martini with the prone stock.
Cannot get a decent hold and let off with it even though they are accurate and have good triggers.

Sort of like picking which one of your kids is the favorite..
But in no particular order, #3 Shiloh with the military butt, 1878 military sharps, 32-40 Cody Ballard,C Sharps Hepburn 40-70 and my original Stevens 22 round barrel target gun, would be the ones I use the most for just offhand shooting. Have a number of other rifles that get used a lot in competition where the targets are shot from offhand, prone and or sitting. Only have one rifle that is worthless for offhand, a CPA 45-90 with the high comb, it's a heavy barreled rifle, but the comb is so high that it's impossible to see thru the sights shooting less than 600 yards..

About 6 years ago, I decided to use the only purpose built OH rifles I have and shoot all my OH with them now.

If lock time ever becomes a issue for me, I may have to use a different rifle Wink

My CPA #52 with palm rest and 28" half octagonal #4 barrel in .32-40 is the clear winner for me.

230 point offhand scores aren't due to the rifle.

Certainly a German rifle, on account of the stocks and triggers.  Probably the favorite is a Stiegele Martini take-down, for which I have bbls in 22RF, 28, 30, and 32 cals.   It is fitted with a palm-rest and has scope blocks and irons of scope height.   Back when I could still do it, it shot a couple of 234's one year, and 0.65" group.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

My favorite is my Schoyen Ballard in .38-55 for offhand. Not the prettiest gun I own, but the best shooting CF I own.

Looks like most people like a Schutzen rifle for offhand. I was just wondering if something odd would show up.

Very nice guns in this thread

For .22 I like this Bill Crane built Stevens 44.  I call it a 44-1/4 since it had a removable trigger assembly like a 44 -1/2 and an adjustable trigger.  I picked this up from Chuck Bordman when he first started selling his rifles.  Chuck spent the rest of the match showing it off to everyone.  I think he had serious sellers remorse.

The schuetzen style rifles are really a huge advantage offhand.

One year I took one of my CPA 52's up to our local silhouette match to compare it against my Shiloh #3 in .40-65.   I'd never shot the CPA at chickens before.   The aperture sighted CPA, in .32-40 shooting black powder, was much better than the Shiloh at hitting chickens.

At 200m my Shiloh is more accurate than the CPA shooting black powder, but the CPA #52 (with palm rest) holds so steady that hitting chickens was almost too easy.

I shoot indoor 50 foot silhouette once a week in winter. Using a 1416 Anschutz with Leopold scope, 25 is all I can do. When shooting my Stevens 52 pictured above, have scored over thirty with iron sights. Better scores by far with a old style Schuetzen rifle. They were designed for OH shooting.  Wink

A few monthis ago I bought a Anschutz 1712 and had it stocked in custom sillhouette stock. It wears a 25x leupold. I practice with 50yd A23 targets. I still have not beat my scores shooting my 1946 Rem 513T with irons.

Im practicing for small bore sillhouette this year.

My favorite offhand rifle is my 33-47 DST pistol grip Ballard.  Ballard DST for .22 also. I have shot over 230 a few times with them, but unfortunately it is not a habit  Cry

I used to shoot nearly all my offhand iron sights back when I could see them,  I used to shoot .22 silhouette with a low wall iron sights.  White targets didn't bother me then, but after cataract surgery, that was the end of white targets if the sun came out.

I used to shoot my BSA Martini offhand with a 36x scope.  I found it just as good or maybe a 1/2 point better per shot than my Ballard, but I have a schuetzen butt plate for it.  Without it, offhand is quite difficult with that prone shock as Schuetzendave says.
