Both tenex and match have the eps nose. To get the round nose you would have to get pistol match or a cheaper version of eley. Wayne

Then you'll have to try some different lots to see which lot(s) your gun likes best. While you're at it you might also try some Lapua Center X and Midas+.

The answer will be "whatever works best in your rifle".  Here on the Left Coast, we shoot 200 yards with rimfires quite frequently.  Our consistent high scorers shoot Lapua Midas+ or Lapua Center-X.  Another shooter did well with Eley Match in a Stevens 414.  We have not seen anyone use Tenex for a couple of years.  Availability and cost and a lack of interest, or probably a combination of all 3 are factors.

Now, here in the Democratic Peoples' Republic it is legal to buy marijuana but not .22 ammunition, so it is whatever is in your stash.  Please keep us informed on .22 rimfire shooting in America.

Well now, Kalifornica is a Sanctuary State, where you are supposed to be able to break any laws you want to, and then claim Sanctuary status and protection from the laws, so just what is actually stopping you from buying any and all the 22rf ammo you want?      Grin

Agree with 40-82Hepburn and waterman. It will be whatever your rifle likes best (and it may well be not one the most expensive ones) AND that you can get a large quantity of the particular lot. There may be more variance between lots than between brands. Most shooters just don't realize how picky 22 rifles can be.

I concur with what is said by the other responses. The responses give you the ammunition that has worked and a point to begin. The best ammunition varies from year to year. This relates to both brand and lot number. You will need to buy samples, test, and then buy all of the best shooting lot number which you can find and afford.

Several decades ago, Fiocchi Pistol Match, one lot number, shot unbelievably well. While Federal Olympic Match was made, it shot as well as the Fiocchi Pistol Match. Today, I am primarily shooting Fiocchi 320 and some Eley Ten-X in matches.

The one secret to getting good tests is to thoroughly clean the barrel between ammunition samples. And then to shoot ten shots to season the barrel with the new lubricant. I realize that shooting ten shots of expensive ammunition into the backstop is hard, my Scottish Frugality Gene reacts each time I do this.

Funny:

All of my rimfire rifles shoot larger group sizes with a clean barrel; but shrink to half group size after I have shot 50 to 100 rounds through the barrel.

Does not matter if I use Tenex, Lapua, RWS or cheap rimfire ammunition.

I only clean my rifle once a year now and do not compete with it until I shoot 100 rounds through the barrel.

TENEX has always shot the best in all rifles I have owned (50 to 200 yards).

I tried Eley Tenex & Eley Match plus a few other brands of target ammo including the cheaper round nose eley in my Mod. 44 Stevens.  The rifle really likes the Tenex & Match EPS nose ammo about the same.  So I'm using Eley Match for 150 & 200 yd BPCR silhouettes & CCI Standard Target for 50 & 100 yd silhouettes, which helps to bring down the total cost.

Works for me as I've shot Master scores in the last two matches and typically clean the pigs at 100 yds with the CCI ammo.  Of course shooting paper may be a little different.

That is why they make offhand targets.  At least you won't feel quite as bad hitting the backstop  Grin

We tried Wolf match target in some of our factory rifle matches.
1 or 2 rifles out of 10 kind of liked it. In the rest it was mediocre at best. Wayne

WOLF Match Target:
CPA rifle - Shilen barrel @ 100 yards - 5 shot groups .875 & .950 (5th best of 26 match ammos. tested)
BSA Martini Intl. - BRC barrel @ 100 yards - 5 shot groups .883 & 1.375 (12th best of 26 ammos. tested)
My tests include different lots of Eley Match, Lapua Center X, RWS R-50 & R-100, Norma Match, Federal UM-22, Eley Tenex & Fiocci 320. Other ammos. previously tested and eliminated from contention.
200 yard testing will resume when conditions permit.
IMHO, there's no end to the testing. You name it - I'll test it. Maybe I'll take a break if & when I ever achieve a 250 in an ASSRA 200 yard BR match. Dream on.
