Schuetzenmiester, I take back what I said about the immigrants, and decided that perhaps we ought to let the Seattle libs do the moose branding- when they finish that, if they like I'll let 'em ask about the goats.
Does mountain goat taste as good as reg'lar goat?

I think the moose branding project will cure them of any desire to castrate goats on the rocky cliffs in the Olympics  Shocked  However, They may be stupider than we think?  Grin

Reminds me of a poem about some of those folks who were worried the moose population was getting obese - they had to take action!

     Them Moose Goosers
How about Them Moose Goosers,
Ain't they recluse?
Up in them boondocks,
Goosin' Them Moose.
Goosin' them huge moose,
Goosin' them tiny,
Goosin' them meadow-moose,
In they hiney.
Look at Them Moose Goosers,
Ain't they dumb?
Some use an umbrella,
Some use a thumb.
Them obtuse Moose Goosers,
Sneakin' through the woods,
Pokin' them snoozy moose,
In they goods.
How to be a Moose Gooser?
It'll turn ye puce.
Gitchy gooser loose and
Rouse a drowsy moose!

You have to wonder how many moose get left in the willows when a close inspection reveals they are 1/4 inch short of legal.

I'm afraid it happens quite often. My partner and I found a nice but rotten 48" bull some one had left on the Kobuk river way up north. I've heard of 2 or 3 in my area. I know one fellow who reported a dead and left moose to the game warden a few years ago. He said if it happened again he would just sneak away and not say a word about it. The warden tried every thing he could to pin the crime on the guy who reported it. The 50" requirement should be done away with and just brow tines used as a control method. That would be too simple though and the State needs the money from the fines.

A friend who owned a large farm here in western WA told me the Endangered Species Act did more harm than good.  A landowner cannot afford to get caught with an endangered species on their property.  They remove me them when ever they are found.  Embarrassed

Bob:

Are there any good recipes for Washington States spotted owl or is it shoot, shovel and shut up.

I shot one extremely large moose in the Swan Hills of Alberta. It was too large quartered up to fit in the back of the 3/4 ton truck.
We tried to put the head and antlers on top and it touched the back window and went just past the closed tailgate.
Could not secure it so took the meat home and returned within one hour to pick up the head.
Unfortunately someone stole the head and we could not confirm it to be a record.
And that big old moose was the most lousy tasting thing I ever ate.

Spotted Owl would probably taste better.

Too bad about the head.  Any estimate on the spread?

The length of spread was the length of a 1975 full sized 3/4 T GMC truck bed (71 1/2").

The record moose for Alberta scored 266 7/8" and was shot near Whitecourt, Alberta.
The second largest Alberta moose ever shot was on the north slopes of the Swan Hills, near Driftpile where I shot my moose.

The largest Alaska moose ever shot was 261 5/8".

SSDave;

I wonder why the moose tasted so bad? I have not had one with a bad taste and I've eaten a lot of different moose. Some of them were a little on the tough side since they couldn't be hung very long due to warm weather but they never had a bad taste. Most of the ones that are going to be tough get ground into burger or canned.

The moose was old, tough and ranky.

The moose dropped in its tracks when shot and was immediately gutted.

It was snowing and the meat never overheated.

Worst moose I have ever had in terms of meat quality.

Had to make it into sausage to make it palatable.
