Joe,
For colder weather casting, I set up a "Milkhouse heater"
on the end of the bench to get the chill off the casting area, fingers, etc. Also cast with two molds, keeping them hot
is indeed harder in cold. So, the hotplate with a slab of steel or aluminum for a heat sink is a good idea that works

Bought a hot plate today (thanks Mike).  My wife even offered to pay for it so I would stop melting bullet lube on the kitchen stove. Now, I can heat up my moulds and pan lube in the garage.

Never mind the mule. Just load the wagon.

I use a hot plate with a piece of 3/8 aluminum on top. Prop the handle up with a short piece of 2x4 to keep bottom of mold level. I also use a cheap heat gun from Harbor Freight to get molds up to temp.

Sorry I'm late getting into this thread, but, just in case anyone's still watching, I use an inexpensive Sunbeam hotplate, turn it all the way up and preheat the molds on it. The trick I've found most helpful is to cut a "doggie door" in a large tin can -- coffee size -- place it on the hotplate and put the mold through the door. The reflected heat warms the mold faster. Works well no matter the shop, garage or whatever temperature.
