Steavens 44 barrel retaining screw?
Nov 23rd, 2017 at 2:21pm
Print Post
Hi All,

I have a 44 that is a very little loose at the receiver, the barrel retaining screw is damaged in the threads and will not seat all the way.

Question is where can I buy a replacement or what are the diameter and thread count so maybe I can make a new one?

Also, the screw on this 44 has a rebated head that is smaller than the hole for it, is this normal?

Thanks in advance,
Marcos (elalto)

Yes, the smaller end is standard for Stevens barrel retaining screws.

OK, I have a new barrel retainer screw, but the problem is also in the receiver threads!!!***##

I can't seem to match the thread pitch to any of my gauges? It is not a 20, 24 28 or 32 tpi, I also checked with the metric gauges and nothing matched. I will have to chase the threads in the receiver or drill and tap for a larger screw.

Does anyone know the thread pitch of this screw???

Thanks,
Marcos (elalto)

Check with Gail at CPA and she might even have the right screw.

Victornet shows a 5/16 X 28 and a 5/16 X 30 tap.  If you have two of the screws, you could grind longitudinal grooves in one of them and make yourself a thread chasing tool that might work.

Don't know how bad your receiver thread is, but in some such cases I've been able to use lapping compound to clear a mildly damaged thread.  Your call.

Added:  Just for fun I got out a little video microscope I have, which can be calibrated to work as a comparator, sorta-kinda.  Three trials, repeating the calibration each time, and I get an average pitch of very close to 28 tpi from a screw that I pulled from a 44 that was handy.

Raw data:  I measured ten threads and got 9.03, 9.06, and 9.04 mm.  Work the calculation yourself to check me.

I just measured a screw and it is .310-30 tpi. The 30 thread gage fits it perfectly. a 5/16"-30 tap would clean it up or you can lap it as noted. If you attempt to lap it use plenty of oil to prevent galling.

The threaded section on the one I measured was 0.273” by 28tpi.  I made two threaded that way and they fit two receivers I was marrying parts into and making parts for.

Lapping or burning in the screw is a valid option, I think.  The point is to set the end tight against the barrel and keep that from turning.  When that happens, the set screw isn’t going anywhere, even if it is a running fit.

With such unanimity as this, I'd forget about depending on this screw to secure the barrel, and Locktite the barrel into the receiver.  How often is there need to detach the barrel?

I just measured three and got .310x30, .309x29, and .311x30 (maybe closer to 29.5).

Sorry; just to muddy the waters further, I was out in the Shop and measured one of the set screws I made, and the threaded portion is 0.303” by 28.

My notations were blurry from Xeroxing; might have been 0.293” badly written.  As soon as my workpiece’s threads got deep enough to turn into the actions, I finished them and used them as-was.

The threaded part of the one I made was only 3/16” long or so.  Probably anything in the thread counts mentioned would turn in enough turns to work before binding.

Sounds pretty unanimous! With all the variations noted, I sure wouldn't feel comfortable choosing one.
