mainspring replacement on CPA

Hi,

Is there a specific mainspring tool you guys would recommend for replacing a CPA mainspring?

I've never replaced one before.  Are there there any tricks to it?

I like to open the action and let the hammer go forward into the breechblock space to take more tension off.   Other than that, no tricks, no special tools.   

Did you have a spring break?

Oh Smiley.   I thought I would need a spring compressor tool.  

Yeah the spring broke when cocking the hammer.  It made a really nasty cracking sound and I knew something was wrong. Fortunately I have a spare that Gail sent me a while ago.

Just back off the tension screw and you are good to go it's really a quite simple replacement. You will also need to keep some finger spring tension on the stirrup while adding the tension to the screw to keep it from falling off. Once all is said and done check to make sure the spring is centered and not rubbing the sides of the.mortice. If need be you can.push it back to center with the flat blade of a screw driver.

Thanks for the information.   The job went pretty easily.   

I did find that the mainspring was not actually cracked.  At least not that I could see.   

The mainspring screw had come loose though and I think the cranking sound was the mainspring slipping off of the stirrup maybe.   It seems to be fine now.  I'll take it to the range tomorrow and see how it works.
