Question on bore diameter.

Hi All,

I have a Winchester Low Wall with a Stevens Model 416 "Circle X" .22 RF barrel that has been re chambered to.22 Hornet. I am about to load up some ammo for it and was wondering if I should use .223" bullets or will the .224" bullets work?

Thanks in advance,
Marcos (elalto)

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

I would slug the bore and determine what bullet you should use.

If using jacketed bullets I would stay with .223 bullets for what was originally a .22RF barrel with a .223 groove-to-groove diameter.

When using cast bullets you can use the same diameter bullet as the groove-to-groove diameter or larger; by as much as .002", so you could use either a .223 or .224 diameter cast lead:tin bullets.

Thank you, Dave.

I was pretty sure that was the case but just wanted to have it confirmed.

Thanks again,

I had one just like that.  Groove diameter was just under .223".  Use the .223 bullets and light loads just so you do not burn out the barrel.

The older Winchesters use a .223 ( 22 LR ) barrel for the Hornet, even on the model 70 bolt action.
