Buffalo with a Sharps

My theory worked - the sooner we ate or gave away meat from the first buffalo hunt two years ago, the sooner we could go again. We wanted a meat bull this time - already have a head, so this one was to restock the freezer. It was on 4000 acres in the Nebraska sand hills and completely grass fed. The guide was adamant that I shoot it in the ear due to some dangerous situations he had been in recently with wounded buffalo. So I sighted the rifle one last time in the morning before we went out. My shot was near enough to the ear that he went straight down. I used a Shiloh Sharps 16# bull barrel 50-90 ordered to look exactly like a buffalo rifle from back in the day. It has a Distant Thunder Sharps Sporter tang sight that Jim made for me. I used a 600 grain flat nosed bullet over 98 grains of Swiss 1.5.

Several years ago, my son purchased a buff cow on the hoof from an overstocked, drouthy pasture locally.  He asked me if his 300 Winmag would be OK to take it.  I said "hell no" and handed him an original Sharps 45-70 and a few reloads and advised a low chest shot.  24 grains of 2400 under malt-o-meal.  Buffalo burgers aint bad.  Now he raises buffalo and I collect Sharps.  He is sort of nervous about it.  He doesn't know, but he will get that rifle when I head west.

18 months ago, I donated a dried buffalo chip to the Texas Gun Collectors Association auction with documented DNA certificate and a certificate of authenticity.  Waited until the second round of drinks, and it went for $325. for the club.  Last I heard, it got presented to another fellow at Cody and went to the west coast.

Beautiful rifle and buffalo, where do you hunt them at?  I'm in Nebraska but never seen any hunts here.

I agree with everyone that it's a nice rifle and a super neat buff. I don't understand how you aren't grinning from ear to ear.
By the way, the best steak I have ever had was a buffalo ribeye. Smiley

Concur with the others above, very nice buffalo and buffalo rifle. I have a similar rifle in 45-110

Not grinning, must be due to the excessive recoil, disturbed the chin muscles Grin

Great photo.  Reminds me of LA Huffman in Montana.

Great photo of both the rifle and buffalo.  This is one of my bucket list type hunts to participate in.  Thanks for sharing!

Nice bison (and taken with style) so I have the same question.  It would be great to have a place to take my son for his birthday and have him, and myself, take a pair of bison.

Thanks,

I shot my first Bison, a 3-4 year old bull with my Shiloh Sharps LRE in 45-70 several years ago.  Talk about good eating...

I shot a second three years later with a 50-90 Winchester 1886.  Trophy bull.  Huge horns, but he was 12-13 years old and close to a ton.  Tough eating.  When we hung the carcass at the meat locker and came back the next morning he was on the tarp we laid down under him.  Bent a 3/8ths diameter U-shaped hook straight and dropped him.  Butcher sawed him North to South and hung the halves.  His hide made into a rug that measured 9 feet across the hocks at the shoulder, and 7 feet at the rump.  Shot him two weeks before Christmas, and the winter coat hairs are about four inches long.

Great days they were...
