Fallow with a HW

Nice to see this thread now included as I bet quite a few of us still like to hunt with these old rifles. I took this Fallow stag (my best so far) with a Winchester HW (1901 production) in .38/55 with a smokeless load using the Ideal 375296 GC cast with a soft point insert (cast separately in a specific mould and then inserted into the 375296 mould). I've been experimenting with this style of projectile and they work as effectively as a hollow point on game.
This rifle is in great condition with a very good bore and came equipped with a Lyman #18 ivory bead windage front sight. I fitted an Axtell hunting tang sight and bored the aperture hole out. This sighting combination works well in the bush out to 150 yds.
I chased this old boy for 2 days during the rut and finally managed to grass him with a broadside shot as he trotted towards cover. A whistle slowed him just enough and the old .38/55 did the rest. It's a great round.
There are plenty of deer here in Australia, with 7 species introduced during the 1800's by the Brits. I'm lucky to have Fallow & Reds close to home and a great old Winchester to take hunting.
Pete

Here is how the 375296 SP is made. Tip is cast with 40-1 alloy while the body is Lyman #2. Seems to work best when the muzzle velocity is about 1,450 fps.

Really enjoyed your description of the hunt, rifle, and ammunition! That's a great looking Fallow, and the High Wall is very nice also!
