A friend is trying to work up some cast loads for a fine Hammerli Springfield.  Help would be welcome.

Ken Water's Pet Loads, old Lyman books, NRA publications and the older loading manuals in general were well laden with cast in the '06. Shouldn't be a problem searching the innernet either. Gotta be plenty out there to keep your friend busy.

Lots of loads in Lyman's Cast Bullet Handbook. If he doesn't have a copy, he should.

Statesright - from the loading data table, pick your bullet and you have multiple powder brands - charges and related fps ...
(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links);

And if your not satisfied with the above, here's another loading data website ...  (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

Thanks for the speedy replies. I should have been more clear with my query. I’ve been tempting my friend to try schuetzen and he’s wavering.  The Lyman book lists gas check only and the site from John Boy (for which I thank you) lists flat based as “plinkers.”  Certainly worth a try, but I was hoping someone might have tried the ‘06 in the game. I can’t imagine staying with that cartridge, but this rifle would get some attention if it showed up at a match as it is such a classic. Even has a Swiss buttplate and I’ve seen the groups with jacketed and gas check loads. It likely won’t win, but it would be nice to have on the line.

Pick a bullet weight, pick a speed, pick a powder. Don't use a gas check won't change much. The info is still good. 180-200 gr. about 1500 fps. sounds like a good start to me. Good luck, send photos.

try the RCBS 180 FN  without the check, 10 grs Bullseye for 1250ish fps. Shoots 1 MOA in my Springfield at 100 yards, but is pooped out and worthless at 200 yds. Also try 13 grs. of Unique with the same bullet. Shoots 1.5 MOA at 100 yds and 200 yds. right on out to 500 meters. About 1500ish.

A great load if you can find some imr4759 is 21.0 gr 4759, the Lyman 311284. This was Frank Marshall's favorite load.
I found this to be the best load in my Rem. long range 30.06.

Many thanks for the replies.  I've never tried gas check bullets without the checks;  thought it might lead.  Will try it now.  With a gas check in this rifle at 200 yd, Lyman 311365, 206, gr gave moa with 24 gr 4227, but a bit fast for plain base.  Question is how much lower than the  loads in in the books can one go to reduce velocity.  An article by Ed Harris recommends a 16 gr of 2400 load;  2 gr below the book minimum.  Would similar be safe with other powders like 4227.  Got winter to work on it, new input welcome.

Another vote for the Lyman 311284. Grouped .8 inches at 100 in my 30-40 with 21 grains of H4198.

Don't forget about the famous Pope bullet load (311403) with 14 - 15 gr of 4759 or you can use the same loads of 4227. Note the reverse tapered base band, you just put it in the case mouth and shoot.

NOE, makes a copy of that mold:

Amen!! to that, Frank.  With a plugged case or push-seater, you can breech-seat those bullets in a Martini like the Hammerli.

It does well in my 8.15x46R with a tight barrel, 11.6 gr 4227 (much reduced case capacity).

If the chap is going to shoot that Hammerli Springfield offhand, a lot of time with the weights will not hurt.  Those things are heavy.
