Advice reloading the 50-70

Print Post
A few months back I purchased a 50-70 Remington rolling block of Gone Broker with a barrel obstruction as a project rifle thinking to use the action for a build. Long story short, the obstruction is out (ram rod or cleaning rod about 24"worth) and the bore is more than serviceable.
It's back together and wanting fed. I need suggestions for smokeless loads for the 50-70 Government. It has New York State rifle features so I'm thinking 1872 or so production in good working condition. There are smokless loads listed in Cartridges of the World and was wondering if this was a good place to start.  The mold I have is the Lee 450gr cast from isotope lead 10 BNH.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thank you ,
Bill

Those old guns were built to use black powder, don't be afraid of it. If you have the brass, pick up a can of 1F or 2F and fill the case to just above where the base of the bullet will be, place a wad on top of the powder and have fun. Black is not hard to clean up after, gives good accuracy and is just fun to do things the old way.  I have 3 modern built rifles, a Shiloh, a custom Browning 78 and a rolling block, none of them have seen any smokeless powder and they are all good shooters.
Over the weekend my rolling block had 40 rounds put through it, it was wiped between shots and then it sat till this morning. a few wet patches a couple of dry and an oily patch and it was nice and clean. Yes there was a bit of a carbon build up just infront of the chamber but the wet patches took care of that. Black will shoot well and is not hard to clean up after.
As far as case care goes, a mix of vinigar and water will get the bulk of the fouling out of the cases and a little scrubing with soapy water will get the rest and then toss them in a vibrator with walnut hulls or corn cob will get the last of the junk out and they will be ready to go again.
Its not like Star Wars, do not fear the dark side. Its not that bad.

2400, imr3031, imr4198 are all good powders. Look at the loads in Lyman's cast bullet handbook.

You might try 27-29 grains (no wads - no fillers) of 5744 with the standard government bullet (Lyman 515141).

Thank you for the help.I have more Sr 4759 than 5744 so I thought to start with its the 24gr I also have a supply of IMR-4198. I know some use Unique in the 45-70 with good results in have a good supply of it also.
I had good results with IMR4198 in my 40-90 SBN less unburned  bowder than 4759. Some place I have a #of Dupont BP from a CVA Hawkins I played with 40 years ago and may have to try the dark side if I can find it.
Black powder around these parts is hard to find.
