Two questions. Could we see a full length picture? Second is it a 6 or 7 o'clock extractor?

That will make the serial number over 16801 I would bet.
If it is a standard rifle it will be stamped  44 on the front of the action under the forearm.

The 6-power #161 (also called the Favorite model in early catalogs) was one of Stevens' longest running models, and also the cheapest, remaining in production until Stevens sold their scope business to Lyman in 1929.  I have one of 28" mounted on a 44, which is surprisingly clear & sharp in full sunlight, but becomes almost unusably dark on cloudy days.

(Somewhere on this site is a tutorial on resizing photos.)

Thinking I paid about three hundred for it. Long one.

Seems to be about the going rate on ebay for 26" or more.  Scope should be FOUR inches longer than barrel; any less and you'll be crawling the stock, as I have to do with my 28" length mounted on a 30" brl.

I'll take every 26" or longer Stevens scope in good shape you guys have for sale at $300, and make money selling them if the optics and crosshairs are good!
Not sure where you guys are finding them at $300, but it's half of what I see old long tube Stevens scopes go for! The longer they are, the higher the prices are getting on these inexpensive old Stevens scopes!
If the external condition is also pretty nice, they get even higher premiums!

I believe you Joe, but the price you paid certainly isn't the norm today, or the average. I'd love to find a bunch of them that looked as nice as yours for the $300 you gave! And pretty sure I'm not alone in that thinking!

There's a huge resurgence in old scopes. Considering how many companies are offering new scopes that are made in the style of old scopes, and at pretty hefty price tags, a lot of people would rather buy originals for the same or less. I think the newer scopes might have a little better optics, but I own numerous old Stevens scopes and I'm pleased with the optics on them. Any 3/4" tube with no large objective lens is going to be less than adequate for brightness on a dark day, but I still love the originals myself.
That one you have is a real looker Joe!

I have some of the old original Stevens scopes and some early Lymans also. While there are better optics today, they work well and sure look right on the old rifles.
