Dovetail filler question

Print Post
Well I finally brought my new Winchester 1885 highwall home..man is she pretty.. I want to remove the rear sight and install a dovetail filler/ blank in the slot.
The rifle is high gloss finish as it is a 2016 production. Does anyone make a nice clean fillet I could purchase that won't look unsightly  or am I stuck with things like  Brownells sells..Yuck!!

One of mine wears a 18" Malcolm 6X, the rear mount fills the dovetail. It was on the rifle when I bought it and looks  like it belongs there.

I see them on E-Bay. Just look up dovetail filler. They seem to go for 10 or 12 dollars.

The Marbles fillers that Brownells sells are bright blue finish, and slightly rounded on top. I think they look good.

The picture shows the bottom side, but top is smoothly polished, and blued.

They also have a deluxe fancy ones if you don't mind spending 3x as much:

Most dovetail fillers are a little oversized and need to be filed down to fit.

I had dovetail filler noted above on my new Win 1885 and it looked quite good.

However, for totally functional reasons, I replaced it with a bubble level from MVA. Also looks good.

I think it's MVA that makes a dovetail spirit level that would make an excellent sight filler for a gun with irons sights not so equipped.

I buy cheap dovetail rear sights and cut them in to copies of the old Winchester factory double-pointed slot fillers.

If you shoot long range with iron sights, a spirit level in the rear sight location is useless. The tang sight will be raised enough that you'll never see the spirit level in that location without raising your head out of shooting position.

IF you only use one eye when shooting iron sights, then yes, a bubble in rear sight dovetail is useless with tang sights. However, most of us have two useful eyes. At least some shooters I know use other eye to check on bubble level -- I am one of them. Why waste a good 2nd eye??

You'd have to be cockeyed to have a tang sight raised up a couple inches and look through the peep at the front sight about 40" away, while the other eye looked down at a rear sight dovetail level that was less than 10" from your eye.
You obviously don't shoot long range, or you'd know shooting both eyes open, plus looking at two different sighting planes at the same time is nearly impossible, and would severely hinder accurate shooting. There's a reason EVERY top shooter uses a spirit level at the front sight, if they use a spirit level!

BS Marlinguy!! Those of us that have to do it usually have a simple choice: don't shoot or figure out how to use two poor eyes together. I started doing it from very start, as pre teen, shotguns, revolvers, rifles, rifles mostly scoped. I did it with low-power scopes (2-4X). I did it shooting BPCR with MVA 6x scope, both with scope mounted over barrel and on Steve Earlie's offset mounts.

Shooters that don't have to develop alternative methods of shooting seldom have any understanding of what the rest of us have to do in order to shoot even decently. Irreversible damage to retina of one eye and nerve damage to all 4 trigger fingers has finally stopped ALL my target shooting and all or nearly all my hunting in past few years.

I now barely qualify to drive, only with glasses and one eye.

To anyone with two good eyes, enjoy!!

I'm in pretty good shape after my eyes got lens replacements. 20-20, and not glasses for driving. I must be handicapped though. I didn't know I was supposed to have been born with four trigger fingers! Roll Eyes

None of what you just posted supports the ability to keep one eye on a spirit level in the rear sight position, while looking at the front sight with the other eye. You call BS, and yet it's obvious you do not shoot long range, or can't remember how to do so!!!
I never said anything about not being able to shoot with both eyes open, yet you call BS and explain how it can be done. Of course some shooters shoot with both eyes open, and I never denied that. But to say you can somehow have one eye looking down at the bubble 10" away, while the other is looking at the sight on the end of the barrel, and the target AND still shoot accurately, is the biggest crock of BS I've ever heard!
Even if you had two god eyes, it would not allow them to look in different directions, and do an accurate job of shooting. Beyond being barely competent to drive, it seems you're barely competent to read, or comprehend what's been written too!

Well, thanks to all those folks that think only index fingers are trigger fingers, lotsa folks have been missled. Now, perhaps, you will understand that should your index fingers become unreliable trigger fingers, all you gotta do is train up the next finger in line.  Use that middle finger to communicate with targets. In principle, at least, even the next finger in line could be pressed into service as a trigger finger, but, I must admit I know not of any shooter that has been forced to do so.

In principle, at least, some very large fractions of Homo Sapiens have 8 trigger fingers. Then, there remains the seldom encountered "thumb trigger" -- where does in fit in the lineup?? Grin

My friend Larry is missing all but his thumb and traditional trigger finger on his shooting hand (lefty) and can't grip the wrist, but shoots pretty doggone good! Even with not enough sight to reach almost 1000 yds., and having to hold over!
