I saw someone at a gun show in Eau Claire carrying one of these around.  Anyone had one of these or know much about them?

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

We always referred to them as a "blunderbuss".

blun·der·buss

noun

noun: blunderbuss; plural noun: blunderbusses

1. historical
a short-barreled large-bored gun with a flared muzzle, used at short range.

I've seen videos of this type of noise maker. Normally they are loaded with powder, wadding and fired vertically and make one heck of a bang. Usually done during holidays, festivals, and celebrations. Cannot recall what they are called though. Frank

They are salute guns used to open & close Oktoberfest and other events. "On 3rd October 2017, the last day of the 183th Oktoberfest, the traditional gun salute took place at 12.00 midday at the Bavaria statue. Every year the shooting kings of the Oktoberfest shooting competition are crowned here and this is celebrated with a salute. So, just as the Oktoberfest begins with the traditional twelve gun salute after the keg has been tapped, it ends in typical Bavarian fashion with brass bands and lots of saluting guns."

The German word for thunder is donner as in the Night before Christmas, on Donner on Blitsen. They called those stupid looking rifles with the flared muzzle, donner busch and the name got corrupted to blunderbuss.

Look at the faces of the people firing the guns. Everyone has their eyes shut.

You might want to check this out from The Cody Museum.

Thanks for the pics. Probably one if not the only firearm that one actually plugs the muzzle with what looks like a cork. You can see the rectangular mallet hanging from one shooters bolt. And the lady in the front clearly shows a cork in the muzzle. And a good time was had by all. Frank

I really like the double barrel flint pistol---a lot. flintlocks were my first love and still probably are as much as singles shots.  I've always intended to build a flintlock schuetzen----just too many other projects.

I also like the rifle stocked Donnerbushen in the 1st photo. the one with the flare on the forend to keep fingers from slipping in front of the muzzle.

with the association with Oktoberfest beer, having that flare might make a significant difference-- Cheesy Cheesy---but the maybe the flared mules might help too.

thanks for the link to the german salute gun site , in spite of not being able to read the language it clarified a lot--especially the 'corken" pics.

Thanks for the great Pictures. Those are the largest Blunderbuss's I' ever seen.  I do like that double barrel Flintlock Pistol also .  I have a 3'rd model Brown Bess and a 1822 Springfield and a Southern Moutain F.L. Long rifle project. I like the Flintlocks allot.
