Smokeless lube

Quick question: can I shoot bullets that are lubed with a smokeless lube with BP if I swab after every shot?  I have quite a few 405 grain bullets to use and want to shoot BP.  Thanks.

give it a try, it will only take a few shots to find out if it works or not.  I guess a lot will depend on what the lube is they put on the bullets.

I tried Javelina Schuetzen Lube in my Browning in several BPCR matches and found there was no change in accuracy from SPG. I always wiped after each shot with a damp patch soaked in Balistol and distilled water. I didn't get any heavy fouling or leading. Just make sure you wipe and adjust the dampness of your patches according to the humidity.

My intuition on smokeless and BP lubes, based on some experience, is that one wants smokeless lubes to be sticky, and BP lubes to be slick.  Given that, the only other recourse is to TRY them.   Others have already recommended that, of course.

Thanks for the feedback.  The lube is what comes on the Laser Cast bullets.  I also have some Rim Rock bullets but was told their lube can be used with either smokeless or BP.

If you so desired, you could melt the lube out and pan-lube them with a BP lube.

When I do that, I put the bullets on several layers of paper towel to absorb the lube, then heat them in a lipped pan in the oven.

Not familar with the Lube so unfortunatly there is nothing I can pass on in all honesty. I thought it could possibly be the same as Pork&Beans has mentioned and a good choice. I believe he is the only one to have shoot a 200yd. 250 in an ASSRA match with his BP Sillywet rifle and a real good friend to Boot.

I think I will melt out the lube and re-lube with SPG to see how they shoot.  This BPCR shooting is quite involved!   Cheesy

You made mention o a 250 being shot at 200 yds with a BP silhouette rifle, was this group actually shot using black powder ?, or just with a black powder rifle.
Any details you can furnish would be greatly appreciated, particularly the calibre and load details.

Mick B,

This is from the Black Powder Cartridge News, Fall 2009, issue #67. Rich is a very good friend of mine. We shot BPCR Silhouette together for many years and I was at the Schuetzen match when he shot this record target. To say he was excited would be an understatement.

So many melted off the lube and re-lubed with SPG.  Simple.  Thanks for the recommendation.  The microwave sure did spark and burp but I got er done.   Smiley

The general rule of thumb is that any lube with a sufficient mix of a material that has a long chemical hydro-carbon chain can be used as a lube for both smokeless & black powder. Javelina Schuetzen Lube is a 50:50 mix of Alox and beeswax (which has the long chemical hydro-carbon chain).  SPG, though sold for BP reloads, can also be used for smokeless.  And there are others too as long as the melting temperature doesn't give out before the muzzle to cause lube starvation.  NASA Lube comes to mind and I have used it for both powders
If a shooter is a solely BPCR - the lube for BP should contain at least mutton tallow and beeswax (or microcrystaline wax as a substitute) and whatever else they want to put in it
My home brew used for both powders is 40:40:18:02 mix of PURE mutton tallow-paraffin(an alkane)-beeswax and jojoba oil.  No leading or lube starvation even with reloads greater than 2000 fps

Javelina Schuetzen Lube is not a 50/50 mix of Alox and beeswax.
