If you want to try to be real traditional, WRA catalog No. 72, Oct 1905, showed the following for the Black Powder 38-55 cartridge load:
Bullet, Lead (255 grains), 1 part tin and 40 parts lead
DuPont Rifle F.G. (yep, that's a single F all by its lonesome), 48 grains.
Later WRA catalogs advertised that load at 1321 fps, with a free recoil of 8.41 ft/lbs, while their smokeless version at the same velocity shows a lower free recoil of 5.96 ft/lbs, which may be of some slight consideration for a hunting rifle with a cresent buttplate.
The 38-55 Winchester High Velocity smokeless version with the same bullet was advertised at 1590 fps, with a free recoil of 9.42 ft/lbs.
The 38-55 Hi-Vel round had a good reputation for black bear, and the shotgun buttplate that WRA made available for the Model 1894 does smooth things out nicely.
Have fun!

There are three kinds of men: The ones that learn by reading, the few who learn by observation, and the rest who have to pee on the electric fence and find out for themselves.

If there were any bears where I live , other than Koala bears, I would prefer a 50/90 sharps, you could also use this on rabbits if you didn't intend to eat them or keep the skins.
Just sayin
