Ruger No 1,No 3 tang sight mounting

After removing the safety,
I installed a small steel block inside/just below the safety slot.
Held in place by a round head capscrew, another 10-32 D&T hole, ready for tang sight screw. See pic 1418
Also bored a hole into the top of the stock wrist, and epoxied
half of a 10-32 coupling into the hole. After coating the
tang sight base with release agent, also then built a pad for it over the coupling to give the correct angle for the upright tang sight. see pic 1419
Finally pic 1421, tang sight mounted well back from the chamber
beltfed/arnie
then screw down the tang sight base.

Arnie,

Thank you very much for posting pics and a description of your tang sight installation on a No. 1.  It validates what I envision as a workable solution.

I had thought of a D&T block in the safety slot installed from below, but I hadn't thought of the front screw to keep it in place. I also pictured D&Ting the tang behind the safety rather than the stock, but by putting the rear screw into the stock, there is no alteration of the action. Something I'd do with my No. 3, but not with my factory No. 1 in 38-55.

I'm thinking of having my 375 Win No. 3 rebarreled to 33-47, 35 Krag or something else, and would like to mount an MVA tang sight. I've already carved on the wood a bit.

My No. 3 and a 7X57 No. 1

That #3 .375 looks like a heck of a neat short range lead bullet hunting rifle to me.
I would want a fiber optic front sight(so I could see it!) a barrel band sling swivel and all that extra wood carved off the forend to shape it like a traditional Winchester or Steven's shape.

830singleshot,

I agree with you about reshaping the forearm to a Schnable - something that I have wanted to do for years, but I'm not that handy with a rasp, and am a bit intimidated with the thought of trying.

I bought the 375 as a PP hunting rifle, so I could use soft bullets without worrying about stripping. Never have hunted with it, so now am thinking of a nice 32-40, 33-47, 35 Krag, etc. BTW, it shoots brilliantly with paper patched bullets.  I've got a 9.3mm mold that I use with PP - Lyman # 366408.
Load development at 50 yards, 2 groups, different point of aim:

Arnie,

No - the No. 1 in the picture is a 1-A in 7X57. The 38-55 No. 1 that I bought from you shoots wonderfully, and is being enjoyed! Thank you.

I have a friend who made a sight base for his #1 to use a tang sight. He milled a base that fit into the slot snugly after removing the safety. It was retained with a flat plate from the bottom side, and the base was D&T for the tang sight he used.
He used a single screw countersunk in the adapter base, and threaded into the plate inside the receiver. The "safety" slot held it all straight, and made a solid mount without modifying the receiver or the stock. Pretty nifty setup.

Marlinguy,
Great idea so as not to have to drill the stock.

Here is a Lyman #1 staff that I mounted using a custom base which I made. The tang safety still works.

I saw another tang sight mounting base which bridged the safety.
The safety button was extended off to one side, and slid back and forth under the "bridge". But, like the above, the tang sight is now closer to the chamber mouth.

Saw a Ruger #1 schuetzen rifle years ago for sale that had a vernier tang sight on it. Someone had bridged the safety with a custom base, but the base also sat back over the wrist of the stock, so it put the sight back, and lower. The whole gun was very cool, as it had a Swiss buttplate, and a #3.5 full octagon, .32-40 barrel! Seller wanted $950 then, and I didn't have the funds then, or I'd have been all over it! Was probably 20 years ago.
