Lots of fine looking Rolling Blocks here . I have three myself, a couple of old Military ones , .43 Spanish (My first B.P. S.S. ), 50/70 and last week I just got a nice 60's vintage? Numerich, Navy Arms , Pedersoli yes all three names are on the gun,45/70 with a 28"Heavy Octagonal Barrel and a 32" Brass Scope that I have to dial in.  It has the nicest trigger for a R.B. It was a local buy that I couldn't pass up. Should be fun.

Hard to beat Powdermans 45-70.  Original sporters in that caliber are rare as hens teeth.

Might as well add my hunting rifle - if I ever get a chance to go buffalo hunting! Lonestar reworked 7mm carbine in 50-70. He did some fine work. I finished the stock in red root oil.

That red root oil really brings out the grain.  Looks like an original factory wood finish.  Nice looking roller.

Where do you get red root oil - I Googled it but what came up doesn't look like what you might have used. I really like the reddish tinge in the old guns. I have an original RB Creedmoor that has that old reddish coloration.

I used a CCL Traditional English Gunstock Oil Finishing Kit. Can't remember where I got the first one but I had a friend in England who lived near the source pick me up a second one and bring it to me when he came over. It looks like now it can't be mailed by Royal Mail so the only source here is The Double Gun Journal (promoted by Ross Seyfried). There is always a 2 page ad. I did get some oil and filler from an English gunsmith once who listed on eBay but he is probably hobbled by Royal Mail now also. I think you can whip up your own if you are willing to wait a couple of months while the alkanet root soaks in the oil.

There was an informative discussion on this website in regards to the red root oil and other gunstock finishes.

Galazan makes a pre '64 Winchester red stain. Not inexpensive at $17 for 3 oz., but a little goes a long way.

When I was a teen I finished a stock with what my junior high wood shop teacher called "antique varnish". It looked great but I'll be danged if I can remember what was in it. Shellac, varnish, turpentine???? By the way, Zinsser Bulls Eye Amber Shellac is a dead match for original Parker shotgun finish.

Here's an old Roller that strolled into the pawn shop where my youngest son works. Missing the rear sight, and breechblock spur broken off. But a perfect 11.7 bore, and untouched wood and metal. The shop wanted it gone, so it came home extremely cheap!

This is the tightest old Rolling Block I've ever worked on! The pins fit so snug in the receiver they need to be tapped in and out with a brass punch.
My plan was to tear it apart as a donor for a project. But it is all matching numbers, and so nice I hated to do so. So instead I dug through parts and found an original barrel sight and installed it.
I made up a spur and took the breechblock and spur to a young welder I know who tig welded the spur on for $10. Dressed it down, and cut some checkering grooves to make t easy to extract. Touched it up with some cold blue and reassembled it.

My youngest daughter's husband is getting interested in old guns, so this will be his birthday gift next month, so he can play with it, and learn how to reload and make cartridges for it.
