I'm looking at 165gr, 200gr, and 220gr cast for 100 and 200 yards.  (Ruger #1 in .357 Mag with BS capability).

Where to start on loads?  I have a dozen powders.

I bought my LW as a 357 Mag with a 28" bbl and chronoed the following:

Ruger only loads.

Bsed with 358311, 22/1,
7.0 gr Unique, 1320 fps
9.0 gr B'dot, 1350, Best of the two

Fixed with H&G #51, 150 gr GC
10.0 gr B'dot, 1652 fps
10.5 gr, 1692 fps, Best B'dot
11.0 gr, 1719
11.5 gr, 1808

14.8 gr 296, 1676 fps

Re-chambered to 357 Max:

BSed, WC 820, 358315 GC, 208 gr, 22/1:

13.0 gr, 1353 fps
14.0 gr, 1437 fps, best, 1" group @ 100
15.0 gr, 1516 fps
16.0 gr, 1557 fps

FIXED, #2 alloy:
18.0 gr WC 820, 1832 fps, This is close to the 35 Rem in power.

AA #9 could be used in place of WC 820 but, start 1.0 gr lower. You could also use 296/H110 in any of the loads.

I used F100 primers but, I would recommend Rem 7 1/2 or F205M now.

I had my best accuracy with 14.0 gr 4227, F100, BSed with the 35875 bullet, also 208 gr, 22/1. I didn't chrono it.

Thanks, Frank!
I have both those Lyman bullets (and more).
Don't have the H&G 51, but something similar.

I'm assuming the heavier the better.

Yes, I tried to get the 358311 to shoot (357 Max) at 200 yds, for my wife, when she first started, I don't remember what loads I tried but, it would only do about 5" group at 200. The 208 gr 35875 shot the best, BSed, with the 14 gr charge of 4227 (3/4 as I remember @ 100).

My LW is has a 20 twist, I had no tipping but, I think up to a 240 gr bullet would work. I have a 235 gr tapered BS, Spitzer bullet but, haven't tried it. It would be to much recoil for my wife and maybe even for me in that 9 lb rifle for 10 shots.

A relined barrel about 1+" diameter with a fast twist - not sure without gauging it - 1:10 perhaps 1:12.

My Max is a Cadet with a rebored barrel, 16" twist.  I shoot a RD190gr PP, pushed by 28gr of A1680.  Consistently under 3/4 at 100yd. GW
