219 Zipper goes bang. To crimp or not

I got out to the range with my Gunbroker high wall in 219 zipper improved yesterday.  After having to do some internal repairs to get the lever pin to drift out, it was a super tight fin on the extractor, I mean pound it hard tight! The set trigger needed the spring reformed as well along with a thorough cleaning.  I had some thrown together loads of 30gr 4895 with a 55 gr bullet (several pulled bullet styles) just to get sighted in with my Lyman 10x All American at 200 yds.  The good news is that the action performed flawlessly.  The bad news is that the accuracy was abysmal.  I now have all the cases fully cleaned, sized and trimmed to length and will be working up from 30 gr to the max 32 gr.  My question is whether I should try some without a crimp as the bullets are a tight fit or should I go ahead and crimp them.  I am not really a bottle-necked case kind of guy.  The barrel is nothing to write home about, so I will give this a few months of testing before relegating it to the 'to be re-barrelled" back recesses of the safe.

Thanks

Jack

Boy, I sure don't know how to advise you. Just some thoughts:
I'd try to avoid crimp with a flat base bullet
I'd try a quicker powder with that teeny bullet unless its jacketed or maybe gas checked.
Don't give up too soon, even with a lesser barrel, at least shoot some jackets in it before you rebarrel- maybe you just didn't buy a cast bullet gun.
Never owned a Zipper, but I had a .30 Wasp and it hated cast- damn good with the jackets. I know its not the same, but.........

The rifle came with some Hornady plastic tipped 55 gr bullets so I will use those first.  I may try cast with gas checks if I can get it to shoot ok.  It would be for the local CBA matches.  With no crimp groove on the bullet, I am going to leave it as I have it set, Just short of crimping.  Here it is.  Cute little bugger  Grin

Jack,
The way that I always start out for COL is to mark the bullet with a felt pen and then set the bullet so that the bullet is out, just short of showing marks of the lands. After that I "jam" the bullet, then set it back a .010 increaments.

I tried the loaded 4895 loads I got with mine and I tried 4064 @ 32 gr, using the Hornaday 55 gr SX bullet. The 4895 & 4064 loads ran 1.5 - 1". I then used a online load that I found (Load Data.com) of 33.0 gr Varget. It shrank the 5 shot groups to 1/2". All at the first COL setting. I did all that in the first month that I bought the rifle and I think I could have done better but, I'm really not a jacketed bullet guy so, the rifle has sat in my safe for the last 6+ years.

Better go with Frank's advice- like I told ya, my musings were not based on any experience with the round.

Calledflyer,

The high wall does have another single set trigger for me to take apart.  Unfortunately, I can't afford my fee to reassemble it.  Grin
