Recommend a pet load for 32-40

Print Post
Hello all,
As I posted under "Single Shot Rifle" topic. My buddy picked up a High Wall in 32-40 made by K R Breisen of Warsaw, NY.
Now the fun begins. Brass, bullets, dies, etc. came with rifle. The bullets are round nose 200gr. lead.
Being powder supply challenged he loaded some with IMR 4198, (19.5 and 18.1grs.) and some with IMR 4895.(27.5 and 28grs.).
14grs. of 4227 has been recommended.
I've been shooting long enough to know that two rifles made exactly alike can sometimes like different ammo, but does anyone have a favorite pet load they swear by as a starting point?
Favorite bullet/weight, charge?
Gotta start somewhere but at the price of powder any head start would be appreciated.
Input on card thickness/material. Lube disc between bullet and card? He's to lazy to paper patch, but open to suggestions. Thanks, Mike

Get that 4227, as recommended, that'll get ya way up the road. Probably somewhere between 13 and 15 grains will work pretty well. Good lube, seated no further into the case than you need it to be. Shooting fixed will be fun and possibly very accurate for starting.
Later on, breech seat if possible- look for a thread hereabouts to learn about it. Could be that the bullets you have, or a mold that came along with it is for breech seating, but you didn't mention getting a seater with the other stuff.

Calledflyer, I'm unsure about seater. He mentioned a bunch of stuff but not that.
The old guru who started imparting his wisdom to me suggested not to really"seat" or crimp the bullet, but chamber the round till the bullet contacts rifling so as to avoid "jump".
He had several rifles that he only took a couple shells to the range for a day of shooting. He had them notched, would reload the same piece of brass between shots and index in rifle the same way. I thought it was a bit extreme, but it worked for him.

First get Randy Wright's book "Loading and Shooting Traditional Schuetzen Rifles. It will teach you what you need to know about shooting this rifle. My guess is that if it's a Breisen that it is throated for breech-seating so that will be the most accurate way to shoot it.
When I started out in Western NY shooting these rifles the recipe for success was have Ken barrel your rifle. Load it breech-seated using 14.5 grains by weight of 4227 with a tapered bullet. I’ll bet that you will find success with in a tenth of that.

My favorite Powder for Schuetzen Rifles is 4759, not because I know it is the best but because I trust it. I can with a little effort find a load of 4759 that will shoot super. But what I really like about it is that it is a bulky Powder and takes up a lot of room in a Schuetzen Caliber case. I use between 12.5 Gr.
to 15.5 Gr in a my 32-40 Rifles. You cannot throw a double charge! It will fill the case to the top and flow over. If you do not notice that you should not be Loading. The same is true of 38-55 and 33-40 calibers. So that is why I like it. HTH Regards

Well, 4759 is also one of my favorites in the .32-40, but with it being harder to acquire nowadays, I left it out of my post. By all means, try it if you can. But, 4227 is also a reliable choice, particularly for starting out. One needs to be careful measuring most any powders, so just be aware and take precautions not to overcharge. The sticky here about favorite loads has some for this round, and is worth a look. Have fun, be safe. Let us all know how it's going. Merry Christmas.

Not too shabby Frank. 1.2" average of 5 five shot groups at 200yds.? Must have been an offhand match huh?

Fellas,4759 has been discontinued at least 3 times in my shooting history. But it comes back. I finally found out I think? why. It is a Powder that is used in Blank .308 Ammo for Ceromonial purposes, Salutes. Found out a few years ago that Surplus 4759 that was available from a Surplus Ammunition dealer had it from Salvaged Blank Ammo. It was $6.00/Lb in 6/Lb Bottles. A good buy and works just neat. Bought two cases at the time, have come to wish I had bought more. HTH

14.5 of 4227 is about a 32/40 200 bullet standard. In practice I go up or down just a bit depending on conditions. 14.5 is always the starting point

My go to load is now 12.4 gr of 300MP with a 200-208 gr bullet.  Would not necessarily call it a pet load.  Never sot a pet with it, just paper, the odd clay pigeon (not really a pet) and a empty spray paint can that flew 20 ft in the air over the lip of the berm!

Thanks to you all for your help and advice (and Squirrel Pizza thank you for introducing me to this site!  I posted some pictures of my new acquisition on Squirrel Pizza's post he did for me under"Single Shot Rifles", "Questions about a high wall".

Sounds like I have a lot of learning to do (including patience)....  first 4 reloads of powder combinations got me nothing fantastic, mostly 2-3" with 5 shots at 100 yards.  One group was one inch, except for one round that drug group size to 2".  Neat rifle from another era.  I  am a long way from investing in breech starting, not even sure it's possible with high Combe and scope?

Holding out to get some 4227 powder...

I didn't realize what a new world my acquisition got me an opportunity to play in!  This is neat stuff. Hope I can learn to make it shoot well...

Thanks again to you all.

By the way, my groups were no wider than 1/2 inch. But the vertical dimension (generally 2 and as much as 3") was what varied and opened up all groups. That's not a possible sign of something is it? I use a trickle charger...and I'm not confident I seated bullet out far enough...I push round in with pinky finger but it's not real hard to push.

I'm a Rookie...thanks for help.
