The 30-30 and the 30 Savage are great for target shooting. Back in the 80's they each won the Texas IHMSA pistol championship at different years. One fellow won by shooting 22 chickens at 200 meters with a TC chambered in 30-30. He was using cast bullets. His wife once said the only way she could get any attention was to tape a set of TC grips on her backside.

Ideal Bullets
28 or 29gr 3031
(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)
311291 Designed for the .30-30, .303 Savage and .30 Remington cartridges, but most popular for all 30 caliber rifles. (GC, RN, 170 - TP is 465)

28gr 3031
(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)
311413 The Squibb gas check bullet for the Springfield and other .30-06 rifles. Perhaps the most accurate gas check bullet yet produced. Excellent for target practice up to 600 yards. Has also been largely used for small game shooting in the Northwest, particularly for ducks at long range. Makes a most excellent load where one wishes to save the wear on his barrel from the full charged factory cartridge. Powder charge 16 grains Du Pont No. 80 powder, or 23 grains Hercules Lightning powder. Also very good for other 30 calibers. (GC, SP, 169 - TP is 413)

The 1st time I shot the 311413 in a Winchester 94 - 5 shot, 7" group at 500meters

I believe the M94 was designed first around the existing
32-40 Ballard and 38-55 Ballard ctges, then they came up with the 30-30 smokeless and later the 32 Spl( dual purpose for BP and Smokeless) for the M94.

JB:  That pic is for the 311299- first des for the 303B as labeled, then used much for 30 cals, not the 311291
Both the 311291 and 311299 are GREAT designs I use a lot
for my 32-40 rem hep and in '03A1 Spfld, and 308s

Nope, here is the look a like 311299, which is a heavier bullet
(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)
Gas check bullet for .303 British and Ross rifles. Powder charge 21 grains Hercules Lightning powder. Excellent for ranges up to 600 yards. Seat so case just covers lubricating grooves. (GC, RN, 202 - TP is 467)
The 311291's nominal weight is 170gr and the 311299 is a nominal 202gr

John Boy,
Looks like you've posted the same picture for both the 311291 and the 311299?

BP, in the one source of Ideal bullets with descriptions the picture of the bullets are the same but with different weights

Another source listing pictures of Ideal bullets, they are different:

Ideal 311291
(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)  PS: Should have recognized because I have 200 reloads of the 311291

Ideal 311299
(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

So others don't make the same mistake, source with the 291 shown as the 299 ... (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

Source with the correct pictures ... (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

Thanks, John Boy.
Those last two pictures you provided look more like the illustrations and pictures shown in the 1958 and 1973 editions of the cast bullet handbooks I have on the shelf.

For sometime now I have been shooting an improved 30-30 in a strange 1885 single shot. See the 2015 September / October issue of the SSRJ for a full report. I have really enjoyed working with the 30-30 shooting cast bullets and the new ones with the full length gas checks. At this time my favorite cast bullet is the Lyman 311332GC over 15.5 grains of IMR4227. It has proven to be very accurate loaded fixed.
