What do I have?

Looking for help on the ID of this Stevens 44 1/2. What do the two zeros or "O's" designate? What is the "EX"? Frame width is 1 1/8". Thank you.

The "EX", for "EXTRA" I believe, was the mark applied when a rifle had one or more non-standard features, most often ones which were not listed as same-price options.

Thanx Bill, that makes sense. Can anyone tell me what the zero's mean?

That is, on the tang.  Sellers on Gunbroker are perpetually calling those zeros on the serial numbers.  I have seen quite a few 44/44&1/2 with one or more oblong zeros.  Hope you find out.  (It helped to look at both pictures!)

No....I mean the zero's on the end of the receiver face under the "EX" where the model is normally stamped.

The "O" marks in the pic appear to have been made with a different punch than the single "0" marks that are on every 44 I have seen and on both 44 1/2 samples I have seen, but this is a very high numbered 44 1/2, maybe put together towards the end of production and in the rush towards plant take conversion to war production.

My understanding of the 0 marks is that they are one more Stevens mystery.

Thank you for the info. I sure wish we knew more of the Stevens "story".
