.577 Tolley prize rifle

I've had it decades. It was made by Tolley on a smaller snider action and then engraved all over. It was donated to the Toronto black powder breech loading shooting club as the rifle to be shot for as the prize. What a grand era it was!
Looked around for information but without any results. Anyone out there know some information?

Nice rifle. Seldom see that action done up that fancy.
Might be a mention of the match in the newspaper if microfilm is available.
Not a target rifle, but would work for moose, appears seldom used.

Some engraving of the Tolley rifle. As Chuckster says it is a nice hunter model .577 rifle.

I have a Snider by J.C.&A Lord, London, Birmingham, Bombay that I refer to as a sporting carbine.  Somewhat similar to yours and perhaps not as rare.  It has lighter engraving, checkering, ramrod, and the trigger guard is a little different.   Perhaps among the first cartridge firearms used on tigers in India and dangerous game in Africa.  Phun to shoot!!

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

That's not only a great looking gun, but hard to beat the provenance! I love guns with great provenance. Should be able to possibly find out who actually won it! That would really add to it's provenance!

I have an old Ballard with presentation plaque. Original owner's name was on the plaque, and it only had one other owner/family after that. So was pretty easy to get it's history.

somewhere in my library I have a book indexing "Canadian Gunsmiths"  it may be more relevant to the earlier flint/percussion rifle era  but I'll try to dig it out and report back if any Tolley's are listed.

I too have the Canadian Gunsmiths book, and have have seen a few of those exotic percussion rifles in person over the years! Unfortunately there is no Tolley in the listings, as they were an English manufacturing company.
