Fishied vs unfinished stock?

On a CPA rifle, when it is bought 'unfinished', does that mean that the stock is fitted and sanded to size?  All I'd have to do is to start adding tung oil to the stock?  Saving a few $$$ there would allow for an upgrade in wood.....  Thanks.

I recently had CPA fit and sand one for me on a Stevens 44.  IIRC, I paid extra for the finish sanding, but they also color case hardened the action and I did not wan to risk damaging the finish.

Give Gail a call and ask her.  Phone: 1 (570) 828-1669

From CPA, you can order it unfinished (which is fit to the action but not shaped, brought to final size, and sanded - saves $600 over completed stock with surface finish) or finished and sanded (which is ready for the wood finish - saves $300).

I ordered mine sanded, and the forearms on the 2 extra barrels unfinished, and I'll shape and sand prior to finishing. Gail suggested that the forearm for the #1 weight 30-30 barrel be the sanded forearm, as it is more intricate than the 2 heavier barrels.

Bucksnort,

The stock is fit, but there is quite a lot of extra wood that must be removed.  My personal opinion is that most people, including CPA,  leave the stocks far too bulky to be attractive, although that's probably good for the larger calibers.  I prefer to do my own--with all the extra wood, there is an extremely attractive classic stock under all the extra wood.

As Clarence says, CPA leaves a LOT of wood on their stocks, as much as 1/8" or possibly more per side. Much shaping is required before sanding and finishing. If you don't feel up to it get them to do it for you. Doing it yourself gives you some freedom in the final dimensions and shape and you end up with a personalized rifle.

I prefer not to deal with the 'extra wood'.   I'll probably let CPA do the whole ball of wax, that way, when it arrives, I can shoot it.  Otherwise, I'll have to fiddle around with for a week or two finishing.  Thanks again.

Did you read post #3 above? As John mentioned there are 3 ways to order CPA stocks.
1-Rough, but fitted to metal.
2-Fitted to metal, and finish sanded to final shape. Ready to apply finish.
3-Totally finished.

You can save $300 applying your own finish to the totally fitted and sanded wood. If you don't mind applying finish.
