Scope Question, Lyman junior spot.
Jun 21st, 2016 at 6:14pm
Print Post
Can anyone tell me if a Lyman junior spot is for .22 only or can it be used on a CF rifle like a 40-65?(black powder) And if so can anyone tell me if the clicks can be removed and how to do it?

Thanks
Bob H.

I've used them on all sorts of old single shot rifles in various calibers. Can't tell you how to remove the clicks, but I'm sure someone here can.

A Jr Targetspot came on my 33-47 Ballard. It doest have any clicks. Mot sure if it was made that way or if it was modified.

Didn't leave Middlefield that way.

Wonder why they would have taken the clicks out back before WWII?

doubt there were any specific rules back then, or a more recent "P.O." who wanted to make it more original.  It seems to be our generation that has raised anal obsessiveness about "authenticity" to its own sport.   VBG Grin Grin

This scope is legal for .22 BPCR silhouette (not the same as NRA small-bore silhouette), but it cannot have clicks to be legal. More info can be found on (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links).

I have a nice 30x STS w/o clicks.  The plastic pieces that perform this function were old and grease-frozen and came apart during disassembly for repair.  Still works fine.

While it was controlled by the Lyman family, the company was so incredibly accommodating that it would have made almost ANY special modifications a customer requested, probably at little or no cost.  However, since "clicks" were regarded at the time by virtually all shooters as such an important improvement, it doesn't seem highly likely such a request would have been made while the Junior TS was still in production.

You could find out for sure if the Lyman records owned by Gil Parsons were still available to be consulted, but since he died and they fell into the hands of his shiftless son, they are "locked up."  How unfortunate for the history of this great company if they go the way of Unertl's records--into oblivion.

Wasn't HM Pope attributed with having made a statement along the lines that he wouldn't want clicks on his measuring micrometer, and wouldn't want clicks on  micrometer scope mounts either.

There are small parts in the Lyman Jr. scopes that occasionally broke and left the scopes without clicks. This is not at all uncommon.

I did not know Lyman Junior Targetspot scopes had any internal adjustment parts (large or small) within the scope tube itself.
Thought all the elevation and windage adjustment parts were on the rear mount?

No clicks in elevation or windage.  The elevation is stiff and hard to turn. Anything in particular I should watch for or be careful of if I take it apart?

I've had good luck just removing the rear mount from the tube and spraying the adjusters with Kroil. They always loosen right up and didn't require disassembly.

My Lyman Junior TS did come from the factory with clicks. I don't know if older models were made without them and don't care. My question was how to remove them? Got it done on my own. Thanks for the history lesson.
