Just my ten cents worth to add to what bnice said.
I was having some problems with vertical dispersion with my 45/90 off the bench. In order to reduce felt recoil I had the heel of the pistol grip of my Stevens hard up against the rear bad to absorb recoil, I believe this was causing a little muzzle jump on firing. As a matter of habit I also shot my 40/60 Maynard the same way and got some vertical as well. I now move the rear bag back a bit allowing the rifle to ride straight back and the problem has gone away. Worth a try and costs nothing to try.
Mike.

Timber, I should have been more specific. my 32-40 loads have a 1/32" wad at the mouth of the case, just to contain the Powder. The case seats the bullet into the throat/Rifling. Use that procedure with all my 32-40s and never have had a problem. The 38-55 I was testing is a Pope and I approached that with care. tried it out first on a Winchester with Nickle Steel barrel. No problems and then have used the same procedure in my Pope, again no problems and have shot it a lot. But I have a wad punch that gives me a significant over size wad in the 38-55 case such that I have to use a shouldered punch to get the wad down into the case. It is tight enough so that no amount of bumping it or slapping it around will jar the wad loose. Frank was right to warn you. I keep the wads .100 off the powder so that I can shake the loaded case and hear the powder shake inside. I have never rung a Barrel or chamber. My standard load in 32-40 is 15.0 Grs 4759, CCI Large Pistol Primer. In 38-55 18 Grs 4759, same primer CCI 300. Neither of these loads show any sign of High Pressure at all. Some of these shells have had over 1000 shots fired and are still in use. Now if I were a Bench shooter I might not like the results. But as my interest is Offhand I am satisfied with the apparent accuracy. HTH. Regards, FITZ. Smiley
P.S. I have never said that 4759 was the very best Powder for these Rifles. Just that I can with a little effort find a good and acceptable shooting load. What I do like is that in these calibers with the Powder charges I have listed it is Impossible to throw a double charge that you do not notice. Try it, 30 Grs 4759 runs right over the top of a 32-40 cartridge. 36 Grs 4759 does the same in a 38-55 case. HTH Regards, FITZ. Smiley

Thanks Fitz!  I have learned a lot on this website.  I had no idea of breech loading or some of the reloading techniques that I've read.  Most techniques are too advanced for me for a while. Breech loading seems like the cats meow!  When I grow up I really want to figure out how.  I can see how effective that technique could be.  Not rushing to invest just yet.

I'm like you, bench shooting is mostly to find out what a rifle can do. I stand to find out what I can do.  It's a whole new game...but this rifle is made for the bench (too heavy to tote far from the truck) so I will play that game for a while...25x is a lot of scope for offhand.

Timber, I am shooting a 32-40 with the same barrel maker.  I am using a Saeco bullet and 14.2 gr. of IMR 4227 and the last group was .8" at 100 yards.  This is also the load I was recommended from CPA.

Just saying......Merry Crhistmas

Yes, breech seating! I am a monkey! Let me see it, I can do it!  I'm not spending the money on a seating tool just yet. Not exactly sure how the brass with it's powder charge works... after seating the bullet.

Thanks Traveler! And Merry Christmas! Where do I find/buy that bullet? I haven't found on Google yet and how heavy?  I'm having hard time with local gunshops having 4227.  Going to have to order.

I do think the chamber in my barrel is coned for breach seating.  I was messing around with bullet seating depth and my 200 grain bullet can stick way out (maybe 20% seats in brass) and can stick in chamber with force and just barely extract and bullet stays in brass.

Thanks again.

LOL!  I must become the monkey!

That was great to see, it took some mystery out of it! Thanks!

And I'm still chucking...I will become "one" with the monkey, just have to figure in getting/making a bullet seater.

Timber, here is the link to the bullet mold I am using.  It is shown under the Traditional Bullet Molds, as number 732, and is described as 200 grains - mine come out at 205 gr with 24:1 (lead:tin).

Thanks Traveler.  I'm going to have to get the mold and get a sizer/luber.  Buying cast ain't cheap and I've got a bucket of old wheel weigh s to use up.

I finally got a couple cans of 4227....man that ain't much powder in the case (14.2, 14.5 and 14.8 grains on my starter loads).  Powder ought to last a while.

Other than me learning the hard way on reloading a straight case (kept shaving the bullet when seating, scrunched a few brass... before I said heck with it and "belled the rest of the cases to accept the bullet without damaging it).  New brass...my sizing dye doesn't bell or "round" the case mouth. They all chamber.  I imagine my ape-like reloading abilities have this practiced crowd rolling their eyes and certain that I double charged a case and will ruin a classic Winchester..

Get a Lyman "M" die to expand the necks and create a seat for the bullet so you won't shave the lead on seating and also a chamfer and deburring tool to give the new brass a once over.

You can also get a set of RCBS "Cowboy" dies which have a die for belling the case mouths.  (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

Timber get used to it. Spending money in this game never stops. It seems like we are always wanting some new trinket and I'm not even talking about firearms. I'm just talking the small accessories like: breech seaters,Harrel powder measures, barrel sleds, a new chrony, that really fancy new rest. It never stops. Just get you a part time job it'll help. Probably the most help will be reducing your shooting time.
Really it's a load of fun but get used to it.

Well said Jack...

New Year resolution was no more toys!  I'm not missing out on anything, as it seems I need a wheelbarrow full of money to use the toys I have.

Still ain't found the magic...I haven't obtained a group less than 1.5" at 100 yards so far; my Winchester 52 .22lr with CCI SV will do that and less at 100 yards.

Oh well...wouldn't want this to be easy (because so far it is not).

More powder charge combinations...bullets...primers...etc. etc. etc.  But I did get a neck sizing die!

Breech seating venture and expense reserved for next year...

Thanks all.

This can be much cheaper than you think.  You won't need a big batch of cases.  I have a Ruger #1 in .32-40 with a Ron Smith barrel set up for breech seating.  I have 14 pieces of brass for it.  Some have been used 200 times.

The brass has never seen a resizing die, or any other for that matter.

The breech seater is a plugged cartridge case that I bought from CPA for $6.  A proper seater would be better, but a plugged case will get you started on the path.

I bought the rifle from a friend after he told me about it.  I convinced him to bring it to the range.  He brought fixed ammo, and I brought a plugged case, some Saeco and Hoch bullets, and new cases charged with powder.  The fixed loads were ho hum, but the breech seated loads were excellent.

There was mention of RSW's book on Loading and Shooting Traditional Schuetzen Rifles.  This book is pretty cheap, and probably the best way to get started.

Chris.
