	Hi, I've discovered a lot of special features on this Ladies stevens. But I can't figure out what this "hanger" is for. Does anyone know? At first I thought it was for a palm rest, but that's not it, it's way too far forward, on the barrel about 4" in front of the wood. 	My only thought is that, maybe it was used to attach a ring, for a sling, when hunting. Frank

	I just saw in the 1909 catalog "Extras" page, "Screw Eyes with Swivel and Sling Strap." It looked like where British rifles put sling straps. So, what does a Stevens version of that look like? Update: The other barrel, a 24" No. 1 (I believe, and I believe the above is a no. 3), has a ring "elbow sling" fitting, just like this one. Perhaps popular during the period this one was made, which I'd guess around 1915 due to the Lyman 103 sight. You sure it's not a Stevens factory item? 	That eyelet dovetailed into the brl was used by both Stevens & Winchester, maybe others, probably supplied by some outside source like Bridgeport Gun Implement co. I was thinking the device on your brl wasn't a sling attachment because there's no matching swivel on the buttstock, but the gun in the above photo illustrates that two aren't needed if a cuff-type sling is used.

	My guess is a shooting sling eye, and likely used with a quick removable hook similar to those used in Winchester slings of the 1800's. I believe S&S sells repros of the Winchester sling hooks, if you wanted one just for aesthetics.

	I have these Brit hooks on a canvas sling for a Webley and Scott 1902 in 450-400 3 1/4. I covered the hooks with heat shrink tubing (and shrank it!) so that it wouldn't clank in use. I'm sure PHs would have removed the slings before giving the rifle to their bearers to carry. No use telegraphing the game that you are coming.

	The "loop" in the OP's picture is turned 90 degrees from the eye of the loop in the other Stevens picture's (but the color case, if thats what it is,---looks Steverns-ish to me) Were the sling's "hooks" swiveling so they could go through either eye's orientation?

Never heard of that crazy old coot who made a living out of buying very decent Winchesters, and breaking them up for parts because there was more dough to be made that way? For decades he advertised in Shotgun News & Gun List. He is (or was) from the Volunteer State, but I used to hang out with him at the big Texas shows, making disgusting remarks about every female that walked by. I think he was slightly older than me, which means the the odds of him still being alive aren't good. You might search "Buckingham Winchester parts," but I doubt that he has a website, even if he's still hanging on.

It's worn bluing, as if a hook was used on it for many years. It's all speculation, but since everything else on the rifle, except the scope, is vintage 1915 or so, I'm thinking the hanger was there since the gun was new. The 103 sight also seems to be original, it has some makes in the stock at the wrist from it sitting on the wood, folded, for years. The rifle seems to have several special order features, and perhaps this was another one that is seldom seen. Or perhaps the owner had it installed later. The front globe site is another enigma. Nothing marked on it, but the one aperture has two numbers engraved in an old style font.

Buckingham had half page ads in the Single Shot Exchange and in other mags. Easy to tell which add was his as he had them printed on the page upside down. He was fun to talk to when he got excited. Redsetter, Assuming you went with Buckingham to the shows in Huston at Astro Hall?
