32-40 bullet options

I am wondering what some of you Single Shot shooters are using in your 32-40s.   I have an LBT mold that casts a 165gr but I originally obtained that from Veral after sending a chamber cast of my lever 32-40.  It shoots fine in my original Ballard but just wondering if I could improve on that some for longer range shooting.   So far I've only loaded fixed.

I've not run any calculations on what length the twist would support or even run anything in the barrel but pretty sure it's a 1:16 twist.

Any pictures of your bullets with some weight and application would help me decide if I want to add a mold in the future.

Best Regards,
John

When I shot 32-40 with that twist, my best bullet was a 195 gr Saeco.

A 16 twist will stabilize most any bullet <1.06 and most any spitzer 1.1 long.

If you have a standard throat, a bullet with a .002 - .003 taper will BS and and shoot better than a cylinderical bullet, because it will deform less while BSing.

For fixed I have always liked the old Ideal 321232. Mine casts at about 183 gr. in 20:1, but also shoots real well in an alloy of half wheelweight and half soft with a good dollop of tin, weight at about 178 gr.
Have a fat nosed mold of about 196 gr. of unknown make that is also a really surprising bullet. I think that if you stay away from real long slugs that 'ol sixteen twist will do a good job for ya. That caliber didn't get to be popular because it was finicky.

Thank You gentlemen!  I appreciate your experience and the pictures/suggestions.

I need to do a chamber cast but it's original so I'm expecting some of you may know more than me about what my chamber looks like.

Bore is as good as it gets so whatever it came out as is whatever it is.   I know it will chamber a .325 but would be able to say more about the chamber had I done a cast already.   Soon!  And surely before making any $$ commitments.

John

Ol' Deuce, did you know that Winchester made two (at least) different .32 cal, 165 grain molds? I have a pair of them and, while they both cast the same weight, the  nose shape on one is more tapered and it cast a couple of thou fatter. Had 'em for years before I discovered that they are different. Neither is a terrific choice for my piece though.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

You're guess on twist rate should be correct John. All my Ballards in .32-40 have a 1:16" twist rate. I've had excellent results with a 170 grain bullet I cast with a Lyman 319247 mold. But I don't shoot as much long range as you do, so really haven't spent much time testing it at really long distances.

Is there anyone selling 'store boughts' for the .32-20 and/or .32-40?  It might be good to try a bullet profile before investing in a mold.  Thanks.

Hi all....

I have a Martini Cadet actioned 32:40. Heavy .320 barrel. Currently use a 165g Lyman which drops at .321.
Also have a home made which drops them a bit large at .323 (184g) and the re-sizing tends to leave a tail on the end. It does shoot well if I spend the time to tidy them up but in all honesty I'd rather just shoot the Lyman.
I'm happy with the heavier bullet so was hoping one of you guys might like to part with one of your molds if it is excess to requirement. Tongue

If you or anyone you might know has a mold they would part with, please let me know. Cheers D.R.
