Breech seating using Stevens action?

I was looking though CPA's website and it says you can use the Stevens action to breech seat bullets without using a mechanical seater. Have any of you tried this with much success? I assume this would work with the 44 action as well and not just the 44 1/2? I am thinking of contacting Rocky Mountain Cartridge to see if they would make a solid case with the same outside dimensions, but not hollowed out. Is it worth fiddling with?

It will work pretty well and the 44 action has more travel and leverage than a 44 1/2 to BS.

You don't need to have a case made, you can just make a piece of brass to slide inside the fire formed case or even use a hardwood dowel.

If you use brass, you can thread the end that goes into the case for a 1/4" set screw so that you can adjust your BS depth.

On a 44 1/2, using a ~200 gr bullet, a tapered bullet will help you get the bullet far enough in to have enough travel with the breech block to get it BSed w/o trouble.

There are different ways to set the BSer but, the easiest method is to have at least 2/3 of the base band engraved with rifling, and adjust from that point, usually deeper.

You'll love how much better it shoots BSed Smiley

Enjoy,

I used to BS a 44 1/2 with a push rod type seater.  I had a door knob type handle. I pushed the bullet in a popped it with the heal of my hand.  Shot 248 with it back when 250s were unheard of  Grin

I breech-seat with my Stevens rifles with 44 actions using a fired case filled with a wooden dowel.  I do this with both 28-30 and 25-20 SS cases.  No specially-made cases.  Just hardwood dowels and a bit of sandpaper to adjust seating depth.  Not fancy, but it works very well if you stick to soft lead bullets.
