25-25 Stevens

Does anyone shoot one. I have one in a 44 1/2.
Is it worth messing with. I have other rifles. I don't want to put work and money into something that will be put back in the rack because it is just too hard..
Thanks

I had one with a Stevens factory barrel. It was lots of fun to shoot-and accurate. Just use the same load you would use with a .25-20SS and it will do well. I had no trouble with extraction or any of the other problems you sometimes see written about. You can always do fine tuning as you get into shooting it more. I found that my 44 1/2 would shoot 100 grain bullets just fine. Be sure you get a mold that casts bullets of .2585" or a bit bigger.

That was the basic disappointment I've had with the .25-25. It's Cool and all that, but it hasn't really done anything that couldn't already be done just as well with the .25-20 or the .25-21, except costing more to run, at least with lead bullets.
All I have been able to find for it are the miserable Bertram shells, though. Better brass might help things. And the experience is worth something, anyway, especially if you are a Stevens fan.

I have an original #45 range rifle on the 44 action in 25-25. Haven't done a lot of load development and normal 5 shot groups at 100 yards is 1.5 to 2 inches with the iron sights and my old eyes. It's fun to shoot and doesn't give any problems. Best bullet so far is about 98 grains.

still offers turned brass cases. They're not cheap.

Thanks for the reminder. Last I checked, the company had been sold and was in the process of moving to a new location. Glad to see it's up and running again.

If you breech seat you can turn the base down on a .32 Federal Mag case and then size it down in a .25-21 die (available from CH4D) or thin the rim on a .22 Hornet case, open it up with a .25 caliber expander ball, and then fireform in the .25-25 chamber.
These also work for .25-21 Stevens.
Not elegant, but a lot less expensive than the available alternatives.
