My LGS has them for $1049 which is the best price if I remember and all online stores are out. In your expeirences is this a good price and any other comments or options? I know about the 1:8 advertised vs 1:9 actual.

Thank you,
CHarles

Charles I don't know about the price is it the 1-V varmit version? If so a few a years back my youngest grand daughter then about 14 literaly drove four thumb tacks in a row with it at 100yds. at our yearly Turkey Shoot with one a gentleman there loaned her to shoot. She was also a smallbore competitior at the time and knew how to shoot. I do not know what additional work might have been done with the rifle or his handload data but I was indeed extremely impressed and of course she wanted PaPa to buy her one just like it. That I I did not due because just prior to that I had just bought her a new 3500.00 dollar Feinwerkbau smallbore rifle and it cost me a real nice full muzzle loading Laudensauk Hi Wall rifle kit to be able to do so but she is well worth it! Her goal was to shoot her way into a College scholarship but unforessen health issues popped up and have not allowed her to do so.

Wow, John, that's cool! My oldest granddaughter only got an old Sako in .22 Hornet, and a second- .280 Remington with a cheap scope.
I don't know if I could have dropped a High Wall for her, despite loving her a whole bunch. Cheesy

To answer your question, yes, that is about as good a price as you're going to find right now.
If you want it, buy it!

Ruger put a new 8" twist barrel on mine, no questions ask. Now just need some time to shoot it (am on the road home from Raton as I type this).

For varmint shooting I have found the Ruger 1:12 barrel to be preferable to the faster twists anyway.  Not interested in shooting a bullet that will exit.  The price is right in line.  If it doesn't shoot to suit you, you always have the option to send it back to Ruger and get an actual 1:8 barrel.  My limited interaction with Ruger's customer service department has been very satisfactory, just don't send them ANY modified or aftermarket parts because they will be replaced with current OEM parts.

If you don't need 80gr bullets, then you should be fine with the 69gr SMK or 68gr Hornady bullets. Might even get away with the 70gr Berger or 75gr Hornady. I'm shooting mine at 600yd, so need the 80 or 77gr bullets.

Yes, I am going to give it a try and if it shoots well I will leave it alone. We are only planning on 200yds so any bullet will do.

Just measured the twist on the new barrel and it is spot-on 8". Ruger obviously fired a few test rounds as it was dirty and Hoppe's is getting out some copper along with the powder fouling. Think I'm really going to like the No. 1.

FWIW, 80's are worth a try in a 9" twist barrel. Some will shoot them, others won't. My old Colt does fine with them, as does a Savage I have. Another shooter with the same Colt I have got nowhere.

Just don't buy a box of 500 to do your testing with.

First 50 rounds with intermittent cleaning and Fiocchi 55gr ammoa was not impressive. Part way through I removed the forarm and PoA moved down 8" at 200yds. What do people do to mitigate this? I simply will try leaving the screw just loose enough to slightly rattle the forend. I don't want to bed the FE until I figure out if it needs to go in for a 1:8.

Thank you,
Charles

OK......... finally got out to shoot my 1V in .223R with an 8" twist and Leupold 3-9x40 scope. While the trigger needs some work (crisp & zero creep, the 6# pull is way over the top - guess I'll have figure out how to 'touch up' the surfaces) it looks to be a tack-driver. Using the 55FMJ from Wolf to get to zero, followed by my XTC (AR) loads, all with RE15, with 69SMKs, 75 Hornady V-Max, 77SMKs, 80 V-Max and 80 SMKs, all look like they will shoot sub-1MOA at 100yd. The 77SMK shot one hole, but my position on an unfamiliar table & support was anything but optimum. Looking forward to getting loads developed for 600yd shooting. Definitely like the rifle. Loads were a bit on the light side (being for the AR), but will get them 'pumped up' for 600yd shooting by working them through a 'ladder test' at 300yd.

The barrel got pretty warm. Not quite what I would call hot, but still quite warm and close to hot and the POI did not shift, so the wood on mine seems to be fine, thus far.
