I've acquired my moms Stevens 414 and after searching around I've only found 1 butt stock that is similar . It has a large cheek piece and a large metal curved shoulder guard . Any info would be great , I'd love to do right by this family heirloom

Your Mom must have been a very serious shooter--you're aware that the stock is a custom made one?

Beautiful stock. Either custom made or special order from the factory. Would love to see more photos. What's the scope? I assume that you know that these are very accurate guns out of the box.

Nice rifle- they are good shooters. If it were mine I would shoot it regularly, apply a light cost of oil to metal pets when in storage and not refinish it in any way. These old guns earned their bumps. Reblue or refinish hurts the value and takes away all the well earned love marks that they have gotten over the years.

ZackT has the right idea. That's pretty much what I do with all of my guns. If something is broken you fix it but if it's not broke, don't fix it. I do like period modifications that have been done back in the day though.

I especially like them, with one caveat: has to be WELL done.
Here's an example, pointers a thoughtful shooter added to a Winchester #1 rear mount:

Thanks for the info ! As far as I've ever known , that was the original stock . The scope was my dads idea , I've since removed it . I've also found some sights that may or may not go with it . I'd love to kind the sight for the upper left side . No luck yet

Your sights are the correct type and unless the family had other rifles that warranted them, it's a good guess that they fit your 414.  To be sure is the center-to-center measure of the holes in their bases 1-1/2"?  If so, mounting screws are available from several sources, and your only remaining "problems" are which sight locks upright at the best angle for a good sight picture, and which one suits you best.

Those original sights are somewhat hard to come by.  The rifle deserves better.

I shoot in a weekly Schuetzen .22 rimfire league.  Two Stevens 414s make a weekly appearance.  They are great rifles.

Not Stevens, but base looks short enough that it might be Marlin, spacing for which is 1-1/8".  If so, you can sell it for enough to buy the correct sight.

The correct sight that mounts to the left side of the frame is a Stevens sight made specifically for the 414. Not easy to find and not cheap. The tang sights appear to be period for the rifle but not what was originally on it from the factory.

You can easily determine if the sights are right for the rifle by holding them against the tang and seeing if the plug screws (or holes) line up with the holes in the sight base.

That sight on the right is the Lyman No. 103, a windage adjustable tang sight with clicks that I've seen on Stevens Walnut Hill models.  You might be able to get $300 for that alone, if it doesn't fit.  The one on the left could be an original Stevens issue, or a replica.  They've made so many copies it's hard to tell from the photo.

You have the coolest Mom ever! Smiley

Hell, I didn't even see the 103--if it fits, why look further?

Indeed............ the 414 is a great rifle. My brother's has the original sights and they are not very easy to use compared to a decent tang sight like you've got. If the Lyman 103 fits it would be much better better in ease of use as well as providing a slightly longer sight-picture, which is an advantage. Get some good oil on that 103 to stop what appears to some light rust. Good luck with it. Truly an heirloom.

The tang sight on the left isn't like any Stevens sight that I know of.  It looks in fact just like a modern-made sight that I've got. It may well be a replica, but a replica of what?   I'm a dummox once I've left the Stevens plantation.
