I believe it was used by Rigby for hardening bullets - and yes, not really conducive to good health...  David Minshall has an excerpt on his website, I believe.

Any mention of the ODGs using small amounts of Ag Silver for hardening bullets?

How did they keep it in the melt?  I should boil off at about 675.

Its all pretty moot weather it boils off or not it’s highly dangerous. Cyanide works too, you wouldn’t entertain the notion of dumping some of that in your alloy would you?

I know I don't want either one in my alloy, 40-Rod.  Cyanide is another one of the chemicals I encountered in my youthful mining lessons. Cautioned about both to the point that it's still in my noggin. Maybe it's how the ODGs got that way.
Beside that, even if you figured how to use it, mercury is way to costly to use for that purpose.
